NDLEA arrests 6 foreigners with drug-laden boats at Lagos beach (Punch)
Six foreigners were arrested by the operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency after it intercepted two boats loaded with 1,960 kilogrammes of cannabis, popularly known as “Ghanaian Loud,” at Eleko Beach in Lekki, Lagos, on Christmas Eve.
The six foreigners who brought the consignments from Ghana were arrested during a midnight operation.
A statement on Sunday by the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said the suspects include two Ghanaians, Godsway John (38) and Freedom Kelvin (33); and four Beninese, Chegoun Hounsou (23), Gadabor Nyameto (47), Adantg Sasa (34), and Ayao Kayivi (21). Read more
Lagos to probe DJ’s husband over child molestation allegations (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has waded into the child molestation scandal involving Ohis Emmanuel, the husband of popular disc jockey, Kudirat Gbemisola, also known as DJ Kulet.
DJ Kulet had taken to her social media handle on Monday to announce her separation from her husband, alleging that he had been involved in child molestation and infidelity.
The government, through the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, however, condemned the action and expressed its readiness to probe the allegations. Read more
In-law’s defilement: Lagos challenges convicted doctor’s acquittal at Supreme Court (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has filed an appeal before the Supreme Court to challenge the Court of Appeal’s decision that overturned the conviction of Femi Olaleye, a medical doctor and managing director of the Optimal Cancer Care Foundation, for the defilement of his wife’s niece.
In October 2023, Olaleye was convicted by the Lagos State Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court on two counts of defilement of a child and sexual assault by penetration.
The charges were brought against him by the state’s Ministry of Justice in November 2022. Read more
Four Lagos drug lords jailed 28 years, forfeit VGC houses (Punch)
Four drug kingpins involved in the historic seizure of 2,139.55 kilograms of cocaine at an Ikorodu residential estate in 2022 have been sentenced by a Federal High Court in Lagos.
The convicts —Soji Jubril Oke, 71; Wasiu Akinade, 55; Emmanuel Arinze Chukwu, 67; and Kelvin Christopher Smith, 44, a Jamaican— were arrested by the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency operatives in various locations across Lagos between Sunday night, September 18, and Monday morning, September 19, 2022.
The arrests followed a raid at No 6 Olukuola Crescent, Solebo Estate, Ikorodu, Lagos, where over 2.1 tons of cocaine were seized. This recovery remains the largest single cocaine seizure in Nigeria’s history. Read more
Lagos prince demands hoodlums’ sacking from community (Punch)
A Lagos prince, Yusuf Olarinde, has raised the alarm over the alleged invasion of suspected hoodlums at the New Oguntedo community at the Satellite Town, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Olarinde who spoke to PUNCH Metro on Sunday said he petitioned the state Commissioner of Police on July 22, 2024, to arrest and investigate individuals accused of earlier invading his community.
Olarinde also alleged that the individuals, aided by some security agents, entered his house and apartment without a court order and carted away properties worth millions of naira. Read more
Woman who assaulted FRSC official not a police officer – Lagos PPRO (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has debunked claims that Monalisa Osayi, arrested for assaulting a Federal Road Safety Corps official on December 7, 2024, is a police officer.
The command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed this in a statement on Thursday.
He stated that Osayi was arrested and prosecuted by the Ajah Division of the Lagos State Police Command for the assault. Read more
Turkey-based Nigerian passenger jailed 1 year for drug trafficking (Punch)
A Turkey-based Nigerian passenger, Anoke Roomy, was on Thursday sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by a Federal High Court in Lagos for attempting to unlawfully export 600 grams of tramadol, a controlled substance.
Justice Akintayo Aluko convicted and sentenced Roomy to 12 months imprisonment following his guilty plea to a charge filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency against him.
However, the court granted him the option to pay a fine of N300,000 instead of serving the prison term. Read more
Navy arrests 19 stowaways aboard two Europe bound vessels (Vanguard)
The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT has arrested 19 suspected stowaways who attempted to illegally migrate to Europe by hiding under the rudder compartments of two Europe-bound vessels in Lagos.
The arrests, according to the Navy, were made on Thursday, December 19, and Saturday, December 21, 2024.
The Base Information Officer, Lieutenant Hussaini Ibrahim, explained that the Base’s Quick Response Team (QRT), deployed at ATLAS COVE, intercepted 15 stowaways onboard one of the ships, the MT KRITI RUBY on December 19,2024 while an additional four stowaways were intercepted two days later onboard the MT MCC YANBU. EFCC bursts syndicate of 792 cryptocurrency investment, romance fraud suspects in Lagos (Vanguard)
The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, has disclosed that the Commission, in a landmark raid, arrested 792 suspects for their alleged involvement in cryptocurrency investment fraud and romance scam.
The suspects were apprehended on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, in a surprise operation at their hideout, an imposing seven-storey edifice known as Big Leaf Building, on No.7, Oyin Jolayemi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, following verifiable intelligence received by the Commission.
Speaking during a media briefing on Monday, December 16, 2024, at the Lagos Zonal Directorate of the Commission, Olukoyede stated that 148 Chinese, 40 Filipinos, two Kharzartans, one Pakistani, one Indonesian were arrested during the operation. Read more
