Nigeria’s coronavirus cases increase by 373 to 48,116

Nigeria now has 373 new cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), bringing the new tally to 48,116, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said.

The NCDC tweeted the figures via its official Twitter @NCDCgov Thursday night while giving the breakdown of infections from 19 states and FCT.

The agency added that 34,309 patients have been discharged across the country and 966 deaths have so far occurred.

While an Africa-wide study of antibodies to the coronavirus has begun, as of August 13, the confirmed coronavirus death toll on the continent stood at 24,256. There are 1,073,788 confirmed infections and 769,023 recoveries, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday that evidence from a smaller study indicates that many more people have been infected than official numbers show.

More than 20.7 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. More than 752,000 have died and 12.9 million have recovered.
