NJC holds emergency meeting over Onnoghen (DailyTrust)

The National Judicial Council (NJC) will hold an emergency meeting tomorrow over the suspension of embattled Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, Daily Trust learnt yesterday.

The Senate, which had adjourned plenary till February 19, to allow legislators campaign for their re-election, will also reconvene tomorrow specifically over the CJN’s suspension.

President Muhammadu Buhari had on Friday announced the suspension of Onnoghen citing an order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). He immediately swore in Justice Ibrahim Tanko Mohammed as acting CJN.

Onnoghen is before the tribunal over his failure to declare his assets between June, 2005 and December, 2016 contrary to section 15(1) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act Cap C15 LFN 2004.

The NJC meeting is expected to hold tomorrow in Abuja to discuss current development concerning the leadership of the judiciary, a source told Daily Trust last night. The NJC had on the 3rd and 4th of October 2018 held its 87th meeting under the chairmanship of Onnoghen. It however failed to hold its 88th meeting earlier slated for January 15, 2019.

Neither Onnoghen nor Mohammed will be allowed to chair tomorrow’s meeting, it was learnt. Read more
