Students of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife on Monday chased out the representatives of former Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Professor Wale Omole during a freshers orientation programme.
The Nation learnt that a traditional ruler, Laaroke of Wanikin, Oba ‘Kole Ojutalayo came with others to represent the foundation of the ex-vice at freshers orientation when they were chased out by students agitated over the 1999 cultist killing saga of five OAU students.
IProfessor Wale Omole was the VC of the institution during the gruesome killing of George Iwilade(Afrika) and four others in 1999 with student alleging he had something to do with it. Read more
Blackout in Northern states worries Tinubu (Tribune)
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed concern over the blackout in the northern region of Nigeria in the last week.
According to a statement issued on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), he is now leading efforts to end the disruption that has paralysed social and economic activities, summoning the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
The statement said President Tinubu has directed the Minister of Power and relevant agencies to speed up the pace of work to restore electricity to all the affected states in the North. Read more

A Dispatch rider, Monday Osazuwa, has testified before a Lagos High court sitting in Ikeja that the former Governor of the Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, instructed him not to keep any record of the monies he allegedly collected on Emefiele’s behalf.
Osazuwa, who is the first prosecution witness in the trial of Emefiele, took the witness box again on Monday following an application granted by Justice Rahman Oshodi for his recall.
Emefiele is standing trial over alleged abuse of office and money laundering to the tune of $4.5bn and N2.8bn. Read more

The Jigawa Government has prosecuted 403 persons arrested in connection with the August 1 nationwide #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protest in the state.
Mr Bello Abdulkadir-Fanini, state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Bello made this known while speaking with newsmen, in Dutse on Monday.
Abdulkadir-Fanini said that the suspects were sentenced to various community services, while others with criminal cases were admitted to bail as investigation was still ongoing into their respective cases. Read more

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, issued the directive in Abuja on Monday at the opening of a two-day performance contract signing retreat for the Interior Ministry and heads of its paramilitary agencies.
The event, themed “United Front for a Secure Nation and Future,”brought together key agencies under the Ministry, including the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Fire Service, the NCoS, the National Identity Management Commission, and the Civil Defence Correctional Fire and Immigration Board. A Civil Society Organisation, the Lagos People’s Assembly, has urged the state House of Assembly not to scrap 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
Daily Trust reports that there is a bill in the house seeking to scrap the LCDAs created by President Bola Tinubu when he was governor of the state.
The bill is in respect of the autonomy granted to the 774 local governments in Nigeria by the Supreme Court. Read more
Scavengers caused Abuja building collapse where 7 died — FCTA (Leadership)
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) through the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has announced that the tragic building collapse in Sabon Lugbe area on the Airport Road in Abuja, has claimed the lives of seven persons.
FEMD also refuted media claims that 40 people were trapped beneath the rubble of the structure after the building collapsed.

US announces visa restrictions for Ghana (AfricaNews)

Israel bans UNRWA, the UN relief agency for Palestinian refugees (NBC)
Israel’s parliament voted Monday to ban the operations of the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, the main humanitarian aid agency operating in Gaza.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a statement on the legislation reiterating the accusations that UNRWA employees are involved in terrorist activities in the region. An investigation by the UN Office of Internal Oversight Services closed in August, with some allegations being debunked and noting that others lacked sufficient evidence.
However, the agency noted that nine employees may have been involved in the Oct. 7 terror attack against Israel if evidence was “authenticated and corroborated.” UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said those contracts would be terminated. Read more

Senior coroner for Essex Lincoln Brookes, who was not at the coroner’s court in Chelmsford at the time, said he regularly has nightmares about the incident, Chelmsford Crown Court heard.
The defendants had turned up at the court with a set of handcuffs on 20 April last year, entered a room where another coroner was conducting documentary inquests, demanded to know where Mr Brookes was and said they were shutting down the court. Read more

Student kills himself after botched beard transplant by estate agent (Metro)
A French student took his own life after undergoing a botched beard transplant in Turkey carried out by an estate agent posing as a surgeon.
Mathieu Vigier Latour, 24, travelled to Istanbul in March for the transplant, which cost him just €1,300- five times less than the procedure costs in France.
The young Frenchman booked the procedure after seeing the clinic carried the stamp of approval from the Turkish ministry of health, his grieving father Jacques told French media. Read more

Liam Lawson has apologized for showing Red Bull’s Sergio Perez the middle finger during the pair’s heated battle in the Mexico City Grand Prix, admitting he acted out of frustration.
The clash between the two unfolded on lap 19, when Perez tried to overtake Lawson at Turn 4. The Mexican driver managed to get ahead, pushing Lawson wide, but the Kiwi kept his foot in and the pair collided on the right-hander switchback to Turn 5.
