The party also said that it will seek the protection of the security agencies and mobilise members across the nation to resist the invasion of its offices nationwide.

Sowore leads protest to police headquarters, demands removal of IGP over alleged illegal tenure extension (Leadership)

Human rights activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, on Wednesday, led a protest to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters (FHQ) in Abuja, demanding the immediate removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, over what he described as an “illegal tenure extension” for the Number 1 policeman.

The protesters, holding banners that featured an altered image of Egbetokun wearing President Bola Tinubu’s signature cap with a red cross over his face, accused the police chief of occupying the position unlawfully following his mandatory retirement in September 2024.

Citing provisions of the 1999 Constitution, the protesters argued that public servants are required to retire after 35 years of service or upon reaching the age of 60—whichever comes first. Read more

Thrift collector arraigned for alleged N3.3m theft (Guardian)

A 36-year-of thrift collector, Janet Nathan, was on Wednesday docked in a Kaduna State Magistrate Court for allegedly stealing N3.3 million belonging to some traders.

Nathan, who resides in Trikania Kaduna, is standing trial on a six-count charge bordering on fraud and stealing.

Nigeria posts $6.83b balance of payments surplus in 2024 (Vanguard)

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced a Balance of Payments (BOP) surplus of $6.83 billion for the 2024 financial year, marking a decisive turnaround from deficits of $3.34 billion in 2023 and $3.32 billion in 2022.

This improvement reflects the impact of wide-ranging macroeconomic reforms, stronger trade performance, and renewed investor confidence in Nigeria’s economy.

The current and capital account recorded a surplus of $17.22 billion in 2024, underpinned by a goods trade surplus of $13.17 billion. Petroleum imports declined by 23.2 percent to $14.06 billion, while non-oil imports fell by 12.6 per cent to $25.74 billion. On the export side, gas exports rose by 48.3 per cent to $8.66 billion, and non-oil exports increased by 24.6 per cent to $7.46 billion. Read more

The Chinese government responded after US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth warned Tuesday that the Panama Canal remains under persistent threat from China.

“The United States will not allow China or any other nation to jeopardize the operation of the canal,” Hegseth said. “To this end, the United States and Panama have done more in recent weeks to strengthen our defense and security cooperation than we have in decades.”

David Lynch’s epitaph has been revealed and it’s typically cryptic (NME)

The grave of director David Lynch has been revealed by his daughter Jennifer, with a mysterious epitaph worthy of his filmmaking reputation.

Lynch, the visionary known for the TV show Twin Peaks and films such as Mulholland Drive and Eraserhead, passed away at his daughter’s home in Los Angeles in January, after being evacuated during the city’s wild fires. He was 78.

In a post on her Instagram account, Jennifer Lynch shared a photo of his gravestone, which read “David Keith Lynch” with the epitaph “Night Blooming Jasmine”. Read more
