Okada riders are sleeping with our wives; pay our salaries now; pay us our 18-months salary; pay us our stipends and allowances now’, were some of the inscriptions on the placards carried by the protesting police constables in Osogbo, the Osun state capital, yesterday.
The police constables, recruited to complement the police structure in the state by providing intelligence, were inaugurated in May 2021, at Police Headquarters, Osun State, after their training in April 2021.
The protesting policemen, who were wearing uniforms, converged at Osogbo Grammar School area and marched through Oke-Fia, Alekuwodo before they stormed the Ola-Iya flyover to register their grievances. Read more
Lagos police arrest 32-year-old ex-convict for traffic robbery (Guardian)
The Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of Lagos Police Command has arrested an ex-convict for traffic robbery around the Ketu area of the state.
The 32-year-old suspect, Emmanuel Sunday, was apprehended last week Thursday when RRS officials working undercover spotted him while trying to dispossess a motorist of his mobile phone at Ojota under-bridge.
Sunday was arrested a few months ago by Alapere Police Division for stealing, for which he was sentenced to three-month jail term in Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
Parading the suspect, the Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the arrest came as a result of strategic deployment of undercover policemen by the Commander of RRS, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Olayinka Egbeyemi, to comb areas with incidences of traffic robbery.
According to him, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, has directed that the team leaves no stone unturned in the arrest of the remaining traffic robbers in the area. Read more
DSS: Why we arrested Mamu (DailyTrust)
The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed that Malam Tukur Mamu, former negotiator of victims kidnapped from a Kaduna-bound train March, is in custody.
Daily Trust had reported how Mamu was arrested at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano on Wednesday afternoon.
The Kaduna-based published who was first arrested in Egypt was detained for 24 hours before he was flown back to Nigeria.
Daily Trust observed that while the Egypt Air aircraft, which conveyed him and his family members, touched down in Kano around 1:55pm, he was immediately picked up.
DSS operatives were stationed at the entrance of the international wing of the airport several minutes before the aircraft landed. Read more
Imo gunmen shoot Lagos-bound Abia policeman, victim missing (Punch)
The family of an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Victor Uwadinachi, have lamented over his disappearance on his way to the police headquarters in Ikeja, Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Uwadinachi, who was recently transferred to the Abia State Police Command, boarded a bus from Umuahia to Lagos State on an official visit.
The policeman was said to have embarked on the journey to get his document at the Lagos State Police Command in a bid to transfer it to Abia State.
Uwadinachi’s family lawyer, Anozie Emelike, who spoke to our correspondent on Tuesday, said the bus driver, Christian Ekweme, was conveying the policeman alongside other passengers to Lagos when they got to an illegal checkpoint around the Orsu/Nkwere Orlu Road.
He said the gunmen, upon discovering that Uwadinachi was a policeman, allegedly shot him, adding that the gunmen ordered the driver to continue the journey, leaving Uwadinachi for dead. Read more
Panic over missing 59-year-old woman in Ibadan (Guardian)
Residents of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, have been thrown into panic following the sudden disappearance of a 59-year-old woman, identified as Dupeola Tijani.
Tijani, who resides in the Adekile area of Ibadan, was said to have disappeared on Saturday.
Sources told newsmen that she was trailed after she left a party on Saturday evening on her way to her house before she went missing between 6:00p.m. and 7:00p.m.
The incident was reported at Agugu Police Station. The woman’s husband, Mr. Muritala Tijani, said: “I am the husband of the woman that was declared missing. We have not seen her since then.
“We have been looking for her since Saturday. She went to a party at about 5:00p.m. She was coming from the party, but suddenly disappeared a few metres to the house.
“The incident occurred between 6:00p.m. and 7:00p.m. We have reported the matter at Agugu police station. But, we have not seen her up till now.”
At press time, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, is yet to respond to enquiries sent to him. Read more
FMN declares N2.15 dividend as shareholders demand bonus (DailyTrust)
Food and Agro-Allied Company, Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN) Plc on Wednesday declared a dividend of N2.15k per ordinary share of 50kobo for the financial year-ended March 31, 2022.
The dividend which was approved at its 62nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lagos, was 30 per cent higher than the previous year, which was N1.65.
According to the Board Vice Chairman, Mr. Paul Gbededo, who represented the Board Chairman, Mr. John Coumantaros at the AGM, the dividend would be paid on September 8, 2022 to shareholders whose names appear in the register of members at close of business on 12th August 2022.
Shareholders commended the performance and demanded for a higher dividend. A shareholder, Mrs. Bakare Oluwayemisi said the dividend was expected to be higher than the declared N2.15 considering the earnings per share.
The shareholders also demanded conversion of unclaimed shares to bonus for them; noting that the last bonus was paid in 2015. Read more
Kwara principal allegedly defiles 7 female pupils, absconds (Punch)
The principal of Hassanat Islamic College, identified simply as Prosper, has gone into hiding after allegedly defiling seven female pupils of the school around Tanke, in the Ilorin South Local Government Area of Kwara State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Prosper, who had been allegedly defiling the pupils for a while, usually used his influence as the principal of the school to threaten them against informing anyone.
Traumatised by the illicit act, one of the pupils, who could no longer cope with the principal’s action, confided in one of the teachers of the school.
In a bid to acquire concrete evidence linking Prosper to the crime, the teacher alongside other teachers of the school, commenced an investigation and were able to get other affected pupils to narrate their ordeals in his hands.
During the investigation which took place between April and July 2022, the voice notes and erotic WhatsApp messages that Prosper sent to these minors were obtained. Read more
Gunmen kidnap LG chairman in Plateau (ThisDay)
The Chairman of Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State, Mr. Henry Gotip, has been kidnapped from his residence in Jos by some gunmen.
A source close to his residence said that the gunmen stormed the residence at Kwang in Jos South Local Government Council of the state in the early hours of Wednesday and shot sporadically and later abducted the council boss to an unknown destination.
The council boss is also the Secretary of ALGON in Plateau State.
THISDAY gathered that the gunmen, who took Gotip away after operating for about one hour in the area, have not yet contacted his family for negotiation on payment of ransom. Read more
Kebbi governor Bagudu dissolves cabinet (Guardian)
Kebbi State Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu has dissolved the Kebbi State Executive Council members.
Bagudu disclosed this in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government Babale Umar Yauri.
The cabinet dissolution takes effect on Wednesday 7 September 2022.
“I sincerely appreciate all the dissolved cabinet members for their contributions and also thanked them for their dedication and ensuring peace and steady development of the State during their respective tenures,” Yauri said. Read more

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 14, with emergency satellite connectivity and car crash detection technology, at a launch event in the US.
The company revealed four versions of the new handset at its Cupertino headquarters, with an audience attending in person for the first time since the pandemic.
It also showed off a new extreme sports wearable – the Watch Ultra.
The event focused on next generation iPhone, Watch and AirPod products.

Queen Latifah can’t actually be killed off on-screen thanks to nifty ‘no death’ clause in contract (Metro)
Queen Latifah was apparently so good at pretending to die that she had to include a ‘no death’ clause in her acting contracts, in hopes of getting at least a couple of sequels under her belt.
The Hollywood star is known and loved for her ability to switch between showing off her comedy prowess with roles in films such as Girls Trip, and tackling grittier parts in TV shows like The Equalizer.
However, in the early days of Latifah’s acting career, she was perhaps best known for being killed off on-screen, with her character Cleo Sims famously meeting an unfortunate demise in 1996’s Set It Off, as well as in 1998’s Sphere, and 1999’s The Bone Collector.
It got to a point where Latifah had enough of croaking it on-screen and so took action behind-the-scenes. Read more

Burundi appoints new PM after president warns of ‘coup’ plot (RFI)
Burundi’s parliament on Wednesday approved the appointment of a new prime minister after President Evariste Ndayishimiye warned last week of a possible coup plot against him.
Security Minister Gervais Ndirakobuca has replaced Alain Guillaume Bunyoni as prime minister after a unanimous vote in parliament, the national broadcaster RTNB said.
Bunyoni’s departure came after Ndayishimiye, who has been in power for just over two years, had last week warned of a coup plot against him.
“Do you think an army general can be threatened by saying they will make a coup? Who is that person? Whoever it is should come and in the name of God I will defeat him,” Ndayishimiye had warned at a meeting of government officials on Friday. Read more

Justin Bieber says he is taking another break from touring to “make my health a priority”.
In June, the singer revealed he was suffering from facial paralysis, after a diagnosis of Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
The 28-year-old, who has been on his Justice world tour, now says recent shows have “taken a real toll” and he needs more time to “rest and get better”.
It comes a month after the singer announced his return to the stage.
Posting on his Instagram, he says he had given “everything I have” following a recent show in Brazil.
Ramsay Hunt syndrome is when a shingles outbreak affects the facial nerve near someone’s ears, resulting in paralysis of parts of the face.
“After getting offstage, the exhaustion overtook me and I realised I need to make my health the priority right now,” he says.
“So I’m going to take a break from touring right now. I’m going to be OK, but I need to take time to rest and get better.” Read more
Steve Bannon faces state indictment in New York, expected to surrender to prosecutors Thursday (NYPost)
Former Trump White House strategist Steve Bannon is facing a new criminal indictment in New York and is expected to surrender to state prosecutors on Thursday, according to a new report.
Bannon, a key associate of former President Donald Trump, will likely be indicted on similar charges to the federal case that Trump had pardoned him in, the Washington Post reported Tuesday.
In the federal case, prosecutors said Bannon and others defrauded people who donated to a $25 million fundraising effort dubbed “We Build the Wall” by using the money meant to fund the construction of a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico for their own purchases.
The longtime Trump ally was accused of pocketing $1 million from the fundraiser. Read more
Canada stabbings suspect Myles Sanderson dead after arrest (BBC)
The suspect in a stabbing in Canada that left 10 dead and 18 others injured has died after he was captured by police, officials say.
Police said Myles Sanderson, 32, was taken into custody on a highway in the province of Saskatchewan on Wednesday afternoon after a high-speed chase.
Footage from the scene showed a white SUV run off the road and surrounded by police cruisers near Rosthern town.
Ten victims remain in hospital, three of them in a critical condition.
“This evening our province is breathing a collective sigh of relief,” Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore told a news conference on Wednesday night. Read more

The Merseysiders – last season’s beaten finalists – gave a woeful first-half display in Naples and went into the half-time break three goals down, with Piotr Zielinski opening the scoring after just five minutes from the penalty spot.
Napoli saw another spot-kick saved before Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa doubled the scoreline while substitute Giovanni Simeone netted just minutes after coming on shortly before the break.

Football fans have been reacting to the sack of Thomas Tuchel as Chelsea’s manager.
Tuchel got the boots from the Chelsea management on Wednesday morning which comes in the wake of the Blues 1-0 defeat at the hands of Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday.
Some section of the fans okayed the sack of the German manager, alluding to Chelsea’s impatience with managers who underperform.
While another section of the fans believe that the decision was not prudent considering that there is no worthy replacement for the German.

A policy has been finalised by the organisers of the event in the Muslim-majority nation so fans can buy Budweiser beer with alcohol before and after games within the eight stadium compounds, though not at concourse concession stand, and during the evenings at official ‘Fan Festival,’ held at Doha Park.
Hospitality clients have been able to purchase champagnes, wine, liquor and beer as part of corporate packages offering ‘premium beverages’ since February 2021.
Budweiser is the exclusive beer of the World Cup and has been since the 1986 edition, with parent company AB InBev, renewing a deal to remain until 2022 in 2011.

It won’t quite be Alabama’s top-ranked football team playing Akron on its home field, but the U.S. figures to be an overwhelming favorite to defeat the International team for the ninth straight time in the Presidents Cup in two weeks.
U.S. team captain Davis Love III filled out his remaining roster spots Wednesday with six of the top 26 players in the Official World Golf Ranking: Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Billy Horschel, Cameron Young, Max Homa and Kevin Kisner.
They’ll join world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, Sam Burns and Tony Finau on the U.S. team.

Sue Bird’s stellar 20-year playing career is over after Seattle Storm failed to reach the Women’s National Basketball Association finals.
Team USA legend Bird, 41, spent her entire career with the Storm, where she won four WNBA titles.
But having announced in June this season would be her last, there was no fairytale ending for the record-breaking point guard.
