Lagos state government has disclosed that only 700,000 out of the 4.8million Lagosians registered as taxpayers are active taxpayers out of a population of about 22million people. The state Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Samuel Egube disclosed this in his address at the Lagos Central Senatorial district Y2020 Budget Consultative Forum which held at Surulere on Friday. He said the government would expand the tax net by engaging and encouraging the citizens to ensure that they participate in their tax obligations. Read more

He and his peers aged between four and six played gleefully inside the lighted pilgrims’ hall of the airport, racing against one another to catch a small round plastic object one of them threw up into the air. They showed no sign of sleeping soon. Most of them are beginners in South African schools and could barely keep memories of the harsh treatment they and their parents went through in the Rainbow country in the wake of xenophobic attacks. Three suspected kidnappers shot dead in Kogi (Nation)
Three suspected kidnappers have been shot dead in Kogi State during a shooting encounter with a combined team of soldiers, policemen and local hunters. The state police command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya, who confirmed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja on Saturday, said that two of the kidnappers also escaped with gunshot injuries. The Niger state command of the Nigeria Immigration Service has intercepted 32 illegal Migrants in Niger state. The migrants who are mostly Nigeriens and Malians had sneaked into the country through illegal routes, the Comptroller, Mamman Ango disclosed. According to him, the arrest was made in a bid to secure the country’s border and bring an end to illegal crossing by migrants. Read more

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa was jeered and whistled at on Saturday during his speech at Zimbabwe ex-leader Robert Mugabe’s funeral before he apologised for recent xenophobic attacks. At least 12 people have been killed this month in a surge in violence and mob attacks against foreign-owned businesses in and around Johannesburg, South Africa’s largest city. Trump confirms death of Osama bin Laden’s son Hamza (Guardian)
US President Donald Trump on Saturday confirmed that Hamza bin Laden, the son and designated heir of Al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden, was killed in a counter-terrorism operation along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. US media reported in late July and early August, citing intelligence officials, that the younger Bin Laden had been killed sometime in the last two years in an operation that involved the United States. London murder toll rises to 108 after man stabbed in chicken shop (Metro)
A 34-year-old man has been knifed to death after a fight broke out in a southeast London chicken shop. Three arrests have been made over the incident, which is the 108th murder in London this year. A wife who battered her controlling husband to death with a hammer has admitted she still loves him. Sally Challen, 63, was jailed for life in 2011 after being found guilty of murdering 61-year-old Richard at their £1million Surrey home. Teen sues vaping company Juul after being left ‘with lungs like 70-year-old’ (Metro)
A teenager who fell ill with lung disease after vaping is suing a leading e-cigarette maker, accusing them of deliberately marketing to young people. Adam Hergenreder, 18, vaped for more than a year before he was hospitalised with nausea and problems breathing. His doctors have told him that his lungs are now similar to those of a 70-year-old, he said. Read more

An 18-carat solid gold toilet has been stolen in a burglary overnight at Blenheim Palace. A gang broke into the Oxfordshire palace at about 04:50 BST and stole the artwork, Thames Valley Police said.
