Osinachi: Why court sentenced husband to death (Vanguard)

Three years after her death, the husband of the late popular gospel singer, Osinachi, Mr. Peter Nwachukwu, was, yesterday, sentenced to death by hanging by a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, sitting at Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.

Nwachukwu, who was prosecuted on a 23-count charge by the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, was found guilty of culpable homicide, as the court established that he was responsible for the death of his wife on April 8, 2022.

In a judgment that was delivered by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, the court held that the prosecution successfully discharged the burden of proof that was placed on it by the law. Read more

Naira Abuse Allegation: Court remands hip-hop artiste “Terry Apala” in prison (ThisDay)

Justice Akintayo Aluko, of the Federal High Court, Lagos, on Thursday ordered the remand of hip-hop artiste, Terry Alexander Ejeh, aka Terry Apala, in the Ikoyi, Lagos Correctional Centre of the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS), till May 5, 2025 when his bail application would be heard and determined 

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned Apala before the court on a one-count charge of abuse of the Naira, by marching on it whilst dancing during a social event at Madison Place, Oniru, Lagos Island. EFCC counsel Suleimon I. Suleiman told the court about the pendency of a charge pressed against the artist, and urged the court to order that the charge be read so that the Defendant could take his plea. 

The Defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge, consequent upon which Mr Suleiman asked for a trial date and the remand of the Defendant in the custody of the Facility of the NCos. Read more 

Ondo farm worker remanded for killing employer’s husband (Punch)

An Ondo State Magistrate Court sitting in Akure has ordered the remand of one John Odah in prison for allegedly using a machete to kill his employer’s husband.

The defendant was arrested by the operatives of the state police command, for allegedly committing the crime on April 18, 2025, at Agbajo farm, in Ilu-Abo, Akure North Local Government Area of the state.

The wife of the deceased had employed Odah to work on their farm. Read more 

Nigeria, Morocco creates joint venture firm to manage $25b gas pipeline (Leadership)

Nigeria and Morocco have agreed to unveil a joint venture to manage a long-planned $25 billion pipeline which will ship gas to Europe, a Moroccan minister has said.

Morocco’s minister of energy transition and sustainable development, Leila Benali, told Morocco’s parliament that a floating gas storage terminal would also be installed at Nador on the Mediterranean for the mega project.

Benali said, “the project has made considerable progress” and entered the execution stage. She added that feasibility and engineering studies have also been completed, according to Arabian Gulf Business Insight (AGBI)..Read more

PenCom, NPC move to recover N1.3bn unpaid pension contributions for journalists (Tribune)

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has stated that newspaper organisations are owing over N1.3 billion in unpaid pension contributions for journalists.

This was disclosed by the Director-General of PenCom, Ms Omolola Oloworaran, who led a delegation to the Nigerian Press Council (NPC) in Abuja.

Ms Oloworaran expressed concerns over widespread non-compliance with the Pension Reform Act 2014 (PRA 2014) among media establishments.

Consequently, PenCom and the Nigerian Press Council have entered into a strategic collaboration to prevail on newspaper organisations to settle the huge pension liabilities owed to their employees. Read more 

Police rescue 83 human trafficking victims in Ibadan (Guardian)

The Police Command in Oyo State on Saturday said it has uncovered a human trafficking syndicate in Ibadan, rescuing its 83 victims.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan.

Osifeso said that the rescued victims were made up of 57 males and 26 females, including an infant.

He, however, said further investigation into the incident was ongoing, promising to update the public accordingly. Read more

2027: Mass defections to APC looms (Sun)

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is expecting more defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum in the coming weeks, Daily Sun has learnt.

Following last week’s defection of the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, former Delta Governor and PDP’s 2023 vice presidential candidate,  Ifeanyi Okowa and all PDP members in Delta State to the APC, Daily Sun learnt that the imminent movement of more governors from the opposition to the ruling party in coming weeks is almost a done deal.

A senior APC insider informed that the ruling party expects at least 20 federal lawmakers and PDP governors to cross over soon. The source corroborated recent claims by the PDP spokesperson, Ikenga Ugochinyere, who alleged that 40 opposition lawmakers were planning to defect, though Ugochinyere’s warning appears to have inadvertently put more focus on the internal PDP crisis rather than APC defections. Australian radio station DJ discovered to be AI-generated (FarOut)

Australian radio station CADA have made headlines recently after it was discovered that DJ Thy, who had a segment on the show for months, was AI-generated.

Thy, who hosts the daily show ‘Workdays with Thy’ on the channel, was developed using ElevenLabs technology. Every weekday from 11am-3pm, Thy played listeners “the hottest tracks from around the world”. The show has been on the air since November.

The show reached over 72,000 listeners in March but never disclosed the host’s fraudulent nature. Nonetheless, Australian radio stations will be familiar with this trend; Melbourne-based Disrupt Radio publicly uses AI DJ Debbie Disrupt on its channel. Read more

Jeremy Renner has shared details of the split-second mistake he made that resulted in his 2023 snowplough accident, which left him with severe injuries.

The owner of Jet Set, the Dominican Republic nightclub where a fatal roof collapse killed more than 200 people earlier in April, has spoken out for the first time since the incident.

Antonio Espaillat spoke to local TV station Telesistema last week, where he explained that the club had suffered filtration problems for years before the tragic incident.

The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday, April 8, during a concert at the popular Santa Domingo club. Hundreds were gathered inside watching a performance from merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who died in the incident. Read more

The 28-year-old clocked two hours, 15 minutes, 50 seconds to finally finish on the top of the podium after collecting silver at last year’s edition – where Peres Jepchirchir had set the previous mark of 2:16:16 – and the Paris 2024 Olympics, where she was beaten by Sifan Hassan.

Oleksandr Usyk says Daniel Dubois showed “weakness” by pushing him during their face-off as they promoted their rematch to become the undisputed world heavyweight champion at London’s Wembley Stadium on 19 July.

Gresini Racing’s Alex Marquez has claimed his first MotoGP race victory at the Spanish Grand Prix to snatch the championship lead from his elder brother Marc, who crashed early in the race and finished 12th.

After seven second-place finishes in sprints and races this season, Alex claimed a dream race win on home turf on Sunday in front of more than 100,000 fans with the Spaniard imploring them to increase the volume even when he had a few corners left on the final lap.
