The Lagos State Police Command has lamented the killing of CSP Kazeem Sumonu Abonde during a raid on criminal hideouts in Ajao Estate on September 23, 2021.
The incident happened when tactical teams of the Command comprising men drawn from RRS, Taskforce, Ajao Estate Division and other divisions were carrying out raids of identified flashpoints and enforcing the ban on the use of motorcycles in restricted areas in the Estate and similar places in the State.
Lagos Police Public Relations Officer Adekunle Ajisebutu said the exercise was a routine approach aimed at curtailing activities of armed robbers and other criminal elements in the State. “Similar exercises were carried out in the past in other parts of the state which have resulted in a reduction in crimes in the areas.
“After the successful operations which led to the arrest of some of the suspects, other criminal elements and hoodlums in their large number laid siege to the exit of the Estate and attacked the policemen with guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons. Read more
Court remands dismissed Police sergeant over alleged murder of teenager (Vanguard)
A Yaba Chief Magistrate Court, Friday remanded a dismissed Police officer, Sergeant Samuel Philips in prison custody for allegedly murdering a teenager, at her home.
Chief Magistrate Mrs Adeola Adedayo remanded the 30 year old dismissed officer.
The defendant whose residential address was not given, was charged before the court on a one- count charge of murder preferred against him by the Police.
The Prosecutor Inspector Agustine Nwabuisi, told the court that the defendant committed the alleged offence on September 10, 2021.
He said that the incident took place at about 11:30pm, at 5, Mogaji Street, at Ijeshatedo area of Lagos State. Read more

FG bans SS1, SS2 students from participating in WASSCE, NECO, NABTEB (Guardian)
The Nigerian Government has stopped students in Senior Secondary School 1 and 2 from participating in external West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The students are also banned from taking the National Examination Council (NECO) and National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB).
The development was contained in a circular issued to principals of federal unity schools by the Federal Ministry of Education.
The circular was signed by the ministry’s Director, Senior Secondary Education, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, and confirmed by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Ben Bem Goong, on Friday. Read more

Why we’re yet to remove dead persons from voter register – INEC (Guardian)
The Independent National Electoral Commission has linked its inability to expunge dead Nigerians from the nation’s voter registration to the absence of adequate data of dead people.
INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated this when he received chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Nasir Kwarra, at the headquarters of the commission in Abuja on Friday.
Currently, 84,004,084 Nigerians are registered to vote but there are fears that the INEC register is grossly inaccurate due to the failure of the commission to remove dead persons from it.
INEC and the NPC had in 2018 signed a Memorandum of Understanding that would see the NPC providing information of dead voters to the electoral umpire but not much has been achieved.
Yakubu explained that the commission had been conducting a periodical cleaning of the voter register by removing ineligible persons or multiple registrants from it using a combination of technology. Read more
Police arrest women ‘supplying fuel to bandits’ (DailyTrust)
The Katsina State Police Command has arrested three female for allegedly supplying fuel to bandits.
According to the police, the suspects were arrested on Thursday, along Kastina-Jibia forest.
Gambo Isah, Police spokesperson in the state, paraded the suspects at a press conference.
He said they were carrying travelling bags where they hid the fuel while pretending to be common travelers.

China declares all crypto-currency transactions illegal (BBC)
China’s central bank has announced that all transactions of crypto-currencies are illegal, effectively banning digital tokens such as Bitcoin.
“Virtual currency-related business activities are illegal financial activities,” the People’s Bank of China said, warning it “seriously endangers the safety of people’s assets”.
China is one of the world’s largest crypto-currency markets.

MMA fighter dies of head injury after Brazilian bout (NYPost)
Brazilian amateur fighter Lucas Gabriel Peres has died following a Sept. 11 bout in the southern region of Maringa, according to The Sun.
A death certificate reportedly states the 22-year-old died Saturday and lists the the cause of death as a head trauma injury, per Brazilian outlet, G1.
Following the K-1 level fight, Peres reportedly returned home in Peabiru and complained of headaches. Concerned family members took him to the hospital in nearby Campo Mourao. He was later transferred to Hospital Metropolitano de Sarandi when his condition deteriorated, The Sun reported. Read more
