The dismissal of a 71-year-old cleaner, Janet Olufunke Damiro, from the London School of Economics (LSE) has ignited a broader conversation about fairness in the workplace, particularly in the treatment of elderly and minority staff in lower-paid roles.
Damiro, a Nigerian-born grandmother who has lived in the United Kingdom since 1971, was sacked in April 2025 after working at LSE for 13 years. The dismissal followed an allegation of theft involving a student’s bracelet found at the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre, where she was on duty.
According to Damiro, the bracelet was picked up during her shift and placed in her coin purse for safekeeping, with the intention of handing it in later. However, she says she forgot about it until she was questioned by LSE management three days later. She then retrieved the item and immediately returned it, apologising for the oversight. Read more

Kano residents, on Friday, joined millions of Muslims across the world to observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayers, marking the start of the annual festival with the traditional slaughtering of sacrificial animals.
However, this year’s celebration took an unusual turn as the 15th and 16th Emirs of Kano—Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II – led separate Eid congregations at different locations.
Ado Bayero, who was deposed and later reinstated through a controversial court order, observed his prayers at the Nassarawa mini palace. The prayers were led by the Sarkin Malamai, Malam Kamalu Inuwa, who in his sermon, urged Muslims to emulate the spirit of sacrifice exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim. Read more

Justifying his decision to dump the party that made him governor, Pastor Eno, who went biblical, aligned himself with the children of Ichaka in the Holy Bible, who were able to interpret the times and flow with the tide.

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on Thursday disclosed that Nigeria would defeat the current wave of terrorism through concerted government efforts and citizen unity, by controlling illicit arms proliferation.
The NSA disclosed this while speaking at the public destruction of illicitly acquired decommissioned and unserviceable small arms and light weapons in Abuja.
Ribadu, who was represented by the Special Adviser on Governance and Subnational Liaison, Asishana Okauru, noted that proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW) constitutes a huge threat to the national security, which had become a key driver of violent conflict, crimes and terrorism within and beyond our borders. Red Cross closes Niger offices and foreign staff leave after junta’s expulsion order (AfricaNews)
The International Committee of the Red Cross announced the closure of its offices in Niger and the departure of its foreign staff, four months after the ruling junta ordered the organization to leave the country.
The ICRC confirmed the closure and departure in a statement on Thursday.
“We reiterate our willingness to maintain constructive dialogue with the authorities of Niger with a view to resuming our strictly humanitarian protection and assistance activities,” Patrick Youssef, the ICRC’s regional director for Africa, said in the statement. Read more
US brings man mistakenly deported to El Salvador back to face charges (BBC)
Kilmar Ábrego García, a 29-year-old from El Salvador who was mistakenly deported in March, has been returned to the US to face prosecution on two federal criminal charges.
He has been accused of participating in a trafficking conspiracy over several years to move undocumented migrants from Texas to other parts of the country.
El Salvador agreed to release Mr Ábrego García after the US presented it with an arrest warrant, Attorney General Pam Bondi said on Friday. His lawyer has called the charges “preposterous”. Read more

Russia launched a barrage of drones and ballistic missiles across broad swaths of Ukraine early Friday, killing at least six people and injuring dozens of others, days after Kyiv launched a daring raid on Moscow’s fleet of strategic bombers.
For residents of Kyiv, the night’s soundtrack was familiar: the shrieking whir of drones, air raid sirens and large explosions overhead – whether from air defenses successfully downing missiles, or projectiles puncturing the capital.

Organisers of the event have announced that the Nigerian remains on the Bowerman Watch List. This marks the sixth update in a row the 21-year-old Ezekiel has been represented on the Watch List.

Former soccer player Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has been sentenced to four years in prison for his role in orchestrating the smuggling of over 132 pounds (60 kilograms) of cannabis worth around $800,000, according to both the Chelmsford Crown Court and the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA).
Emmanuel-Thomas – whose former clubs include Premier League side Arsenal and recently relegated Ipswich Town – recruited two women to collect the cannabis from Thailand and transport it back to the UK, the NCA said in a statement.
The two women involved were stopped by authorities in September after landing at Stansted Airport having flown from Bangkok and were originally charged with smuggling cannabis. However, the pair believed that they were transporting gold in two suitcases each, according to the NCA, and their charges were dropped. Read more

A California man has been awarded $56 million after he was left paralyzed from the neck down by his jiu-jitsu instructor.
Jack Greener suffered the life-changing spinal cord injury at Del Mar Jiu-Jitsu Club in 2018 when he sought out the help of instructor Francisco Iturralde, a second-degree black belt also known as “Sinistro.” Then a 23-year-old beginner white belt, Greener was sparring with Iturralde, 33, when his cervical vertebrae was crushed, according to NBC and CBS.Greener’s injury happened when the instructor placed his full body weight on the student, ultimately rendering him quadriplegic, per CBS. He spent several months in the hospital and reportedly suffered multiple strokes during treatment, his attorneys told the outlet. Read more
