Painter bags life jail for raping 20–year–old student (Punch)
Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Tuesday convicted and sentenced a painter, Sikiru Oluwasegun, to life imprisonment for raping a 20-year-old woman.
The judge found Oluwasegun guilty of having sexual intercourse with the survivor (name withheld), without her consent on July 19, 2021, at 3:45 am in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.
Justice Oshodi handed down the jail term after he resolved the issue for determination in favour of the prosecution who tendered the convict’s confessional statement as evidence. Read more
Lagos to prosecute suspected vandals, arrest one (Punch)
The Lagos State Government on Tuesday announced the arrest of one Abba Mohammed for allegedly vandalising and stealing iron from concrete barriers in the Odo Iya Alaro area of the state.
The government also stated that it would prosecute anyone caught vandalising public assets.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, Kunle Adesina, in a statement to PUNCH Metro, on Tuesday, disclosed that the suspect was arrested in the early hours of the day following an intelligence report from a member of the public. Read more
Portable in police net over debt incurred purchasing G-Wagon (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command, on Tuesday, confirmed the arrest of the popular musician, Habeeb Okikiola, for allegedly refusing to pay the debts he incurred when he purchased a G-Wagon from a car dealer in the state.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Portable, during the purchase of the vehicle worth N27m, paid only N13m and refused to pay the N14m balance.
Our correspondent learnt that whenever the car dealer contacted the musician to pay the balance, he usually claimed that the vehicle was bad. Read more
Police arraign 2 Tiktokers for defaming Lagos monarch, Oba Elegushi (Punch)
Two Tiktokers – Adesola James and Odunmosun Awiye, were on Tuesday arraigned before the Federal High Court, Lagos State, for cyberstalking, illegal publication and defamation of character against the monarch of Ikate-Elegunshi, Oba Saheed Elegushi.
The defendants, known as Arifanla Jogun Omo Odo Agba and Okiki-OshunT, respectively, were arraigned before Justice Abimbola Awogboro on four counts bordering on conspiracy, cyberbullying and defamation.
The police prosecutor, Nosa Uhumwangho, told the court that the duo committed the offences between December 2023 and March 2024. Read more
35-year-old man remanded for alleged murder (Punch)
A Lagos State Magistrate Court sitting in Ebute-Metta, on Monday, remanded a 35-year-old man, Akeem Adewuyi, to the Nigeria Correctional Centre custody for alleged murder.
Magistrate Mrs Adedayo Tella ordered Adewuyi’s remand pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution office.
Adewuyi was remanded following a remand application brought before the court by the police, to obtain an order to keep the defendant at the correctional facility pending the outcome of the DPP’s legal advice. Read more
Estate agent jailed three years for N700k theft (Punch)
An Ikeja Special Offences Court has sentenced an estate agent, Peter Nwogu-Anucha, to three years imprisonment for stealing N700,000.
Justice Rahman Oshodi on Friday held that the prosecution proved beyond reasonable doubt the charge of stealing proffered against the convict and his company, Business Defense Solutions Ltd.
Oshodi said the evidence before the court showed that the complainant, Mr Obinna Ukpabi, indicated interest in leasing a property from the convict through a realtor. Read more
Lagos police detain officer for unprofessional conduct (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command has detained a police officer for failing to maintain professionalism during a confrontation with a citizen, according to a statement released by the state Police spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Friday.
According to the statement, although the officer showed restraint most of the time, he allowed his emotions to cloud his judgment on a couple of occasions.
He added that the officer has been taken into custody for appropriate disciplinary actions. Read more
Police investigate illegal embalming of Mohbad’s body (Punch)
The police on Thursday continued their investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of the late singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba aka Mohbad.
This followed the invitation extended to Mohbad’s family and the group of persons mentioned in the ongoing probe of the illegal embalming of the deceased’s body following his death.

Guardian jailed 10 years for sexual assault of minor (Punch)
The Special Offences and Domestic Violence Court, Ikeja, Lagos has convicted one Dele Johnson to 10 years’ imprisonment for indecent treatment of a child and sexual assault.
Justice Rahmon Oshodi handed down the sentence on May 8, 2024, after careful consideration of the evidence presented, finding the defendant guilty on two counts of indecent treatment of a child and sexual assault, as stipulated in Sections 135, C. 17, Vol 3, and 263 C.17, Vol 3, of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
Oshodi said Johnson physically assaulted Hawawu Hammed, who was living with him, by severely beating her and causing scars on her body and also sexually assaulted her for two years before being reported and arrested by the police. When arraigned on May 10, 2021, he admitted and pleaded guilty to the two counts.
Lagos monarch, others for arraignment over alleged N29m fraud (Punch)
The Federal High Court in Lagos, on Tuesday, fixed June 26, 2024, for the arraignment of a Lagos monarch, Monsuru Abimbola Oladega, and six others over alleged N29.3m fraud.
Other defendants in the charge marked FHC/L/80c/2024 are Abdulfatai Akinwale Bankole, Abubakar Seriki, Razak Alayaki Seriki, Mrs Jemilatu Busari, Amoda Ibrahim and Adams Adebiyi.
The defendants will be arraigned on four counts bordering on conspiracy, obtaining, fraud, and retaining preferred against them by the Police Special Fraud Unit.
