Police arrest car wash attendant who zoomed off with customer’s vehicle (Vanguard)
Operatives of the Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in Lagos have arrested a 22-year-old car wash attendant, Issa Muhammed, for allegedly stealing a customer’s vehicle.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest in a statement in Lagos on Tuesday.
Hundeyin said that the suspect was arrested after he absconded with a 2012 Toyota Camry handed over to him for cleaning in Isheri area of Lagos. Read more
Court remands jealous lover for killing girlfriend (Punch)
A security man, Samuel Adeniyi, was remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre on Monday for allegedly smashing the head of his girlfriend, Morolake Sunday, with a sledgehammer in the Lekki Phase 1 area of Lagos State.
Magistrate Patrick Nwaka of the Yaba Magistrate’s Court ordered that the 33-year-old be remanded after he (Adeniyi) was brought to court on one count of murder.
The police prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen told the court that the incident occurred on August 10, 2023, at No. 33, Audu Ekpa Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State. Read more

Police arrest suspected cultists over murder in Edo (DailyTrust)
The police have arrested eight suspected cultists for allegedly killing one Musa Jeffaru and Kingsley Raphael in the South Ibe community and Benin City respectively.
It was gathered that six of the suspects were arrested at South Ibe, Auchi Etsako West Local Government Area, while two others were arrested at Ogida, Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.
The suspects were, Abumen Raphael, Abumen Benjamin, Aboda Young, Agidigbe Oridibumeho, Sule Ismaila, Odeh Jesse, Umukoro Believe and Odibo Prince. Read more

Anna Kendrick’s directing debut “Woman of the Hour” is nearing a deal with Netflix after its Toronto premiere on Friday. The streamer is paying in the $11 million range for the ripped-from-the-headlines thriller, making it the first major sale of the festival.
In the movie based on a true story, Kendrick plays a contestant on “The Dating Game” in 1978, who picks Rodney Alcala as her potential date. Alcala, who died in prison in 2021, turned out to be a serial killer of at least eight victims but possibly over a hundred. The “Dating Game” contestant, Cheryl Bradshaw, never went on the date with Alcala, who had already been convicted of being a sex offender. Daniel Zovatto plays the killer, who posed as a photographer in Los Angeles to take pictures of his victims. Read more
Spike Lee calls out critics’ perception that Do The Right Thing would incite violence (NME)
Spike Lee has called out the critical response to Do The Right Thing upon its release in 1989, criticising the perception that the film would “incite Black people to riot”.
Lee spoke of the press reaction to his third film while attending the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday (September 10), where he received the Ebert Director Award. The award recognises filmmakers who have “exemplified greatness in their careers”, and is named after the late film critic Roger Ebert, whom Lee said “was very crucial to my career” during his acceptance speech.
“[Ebert] got behind me when those motherfuckers in the press were saying that Do the Right Thing was going to incite black people to riot,” Lee said as he accepted the award from the reviewer’s wife, Chaz Ebert. Lee went on to criticise the perception among critics that his film “could not be shown in the United States”, as well as reviews claiming “Black people … would see the film and take to the streets”. Paul Carris had started a new job working in the North Tower of the World Trade Center on the 71st floor in July 2001.
Two months later, on the morning of September 11, Carris had just hung up the phone with his manager when a commercial airliner hijacked by al-Qaida terrorists crashed into his building, taking out the 93rd to 99th floors.
Carris survived the trial of that day — and would later be honoured for leading a colleague with severe health issues down the 71 flights of stairs to safety before the tower collapsed.

Residents of a suburban Philadelphia community locked themselves in their houses and at least one school district cancelled classes as authorities indicated they were closing in on a murderer who escaped from jail nearly two weeks ago.
Pennsylvania State Police posted on social media that the department was pursuing Danelo Souza Cavalcante in South Coventry Township, about 20 miles north of the Chester County jail, from which he escaped on August 31.
Police warned that Cavalcante was armed and not to approach him, and asked the public to call 911 if they see him. Read more
Kim Jong Un crosses Russian border for talks with Putin (BBC)
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has arrived via rail in Russia where he is due to meet President Vladimir Putin.
Mr Kim left Pyongyang for Russia on Sunday on his private train, North Korea’s state media reported.
It is not known where the leaders will meet, as Mr Kim’s train is reportedly heading north, away from the city of Vladivostok. Read more
American researcher rescued from Turkish cave more than a week after he fell ill (VOA)
Rescuers pulled an American researcher out of a Turkish cave early Tuesday, more than a week after he became seriously ill 1,000 meters (more than 3,000 feet) below its entrance, the Speleological Federation of Turkey said.
Teams from across Europe had rushed to Morca cave in southern Turkey’s Taurus Mountains to aid Mark Dickey, a 40-year-old experienced caver who became seriously ill on Sept. 2 with stomach bleeding. He was on an expedition to map the cave, which is the country’s third deepest.
Dickey was too frail to climb out himself, so rescuers carried him with the help of a stretcher, making frequent stops at temporary camps set up along the way before he finally reached the surface early Tuesday. Read more

It was shortly after the U.S. Open that Halep announced she would skip the rest of the playing calendar having undergone nose surgery.

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that it has rejected the return of Randy Waldrum as coach of the Super Falcons.
The footballing body met on Sunday in Uyo just after its congress held the same day and deliberated on issues concerning Nigerian football and other matters attached to it.
The body has, thus, confirmed that Waldrum will not continue as the head coach of the Super Falcons and won’t have his contract extended despite the American leading the team to the second round of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Read more

Players and supporters of the Ishielu Local Government Area team swooped on the referee, Sebastian Onwe, at the end of the Ebonyi State governor, Francis Nwifuru’s cup final match on Sunday evening.
The referee was said to have been chased all over the stadium as he ran for his dear life over alleged poor officiating in the match.

Juventus’s France midfielder Paul Pogba has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance, Italy’s national anti-doping (NADO Italia) tribunal said on Monday.
The test, performed after Juve’s 3-0 Serie A season-opening victory at Udinese on August 20, detected testosterone, a hormone that increases athletes’ endurance.
“In acceptance of the instance proposed by the National Anti-doping Prosecutor, it has provided for the provisional suspension of the athlete Paul Labile Pogba,” NADO Italia said in a statement. Read more
