Police arrest Islamic teacher, another for ‘raping’ teenager (Nation)
The Police in Ogun State have arrested an Islamic teacher, Ismaila Saheed, 38, and one Toliha Sabith, 20 for alleged defilement of a 15-year-old girl (names withheld).
They were arrested weekend by detectives attached to Redeemed Camp Police Station after the victim reported that the duo raped her on August 25, at Mowe.
According to the police, the victim reported that she was first raped by Sabith at Imedu_nla in Mowe and went confide in her Islamic teacher who also took advantage of her under the guise of helping her remove an imaginary pregnancy gotten from the first defilement. Read more
Court remands man over alleged sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl (Guardian)
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday ordered that a 40-year-old man, Folarin Rafiu, charged with alleged sexual assault of a five-year-old girl.
Rafiu, who resides at Ojodu area of Lagos, is charged with indecent treatment of a child.
The Magistrate, Mrs Ejiro Kubeinje, who did not take Rafiu, ordered the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.
She ordered that Rafiu be kept in the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, pending DPP advice.
Kubeinje adjourned the case until Sept. 9 for mention. Read more
COVID-19: Lagos Biobank handles 5,000 testing requests (Vanguard)
Lagos Biobank, a digital platform developed by the Lagos State Government to meet the increasing demand for Covid-19 testing, following the decentralisation of testing in the state, has handled more than 5,000 requests from individuals since inception.
Supported by Sterling Bank Plc, the Lagos Biobank platform was launched by the state government to ensure equitable access, accelerated testing and improved case management for all in the state in a bid to harmonise data from public and private testing centres, while also regulating the billing of patients paying for their tests.
Speaking on the initiative, Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi said: “It is important to iterate that Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Biobank, still makes prompt and reliable Covid-19 tests accessible to residents at no cost for the public health emergency response.” Read more
LASU students to resume in batches – VC (Punch)
The Lagos State University has announced that its students would resume in batches.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, SAN, made this known on Monday.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had on Saturday announced that tertiary institutions will be allowed to open from September 14th, 2020, while primary and secondary schools may be reopened on September 21.
Fagbohun, while addressing questions during a radio programme on Eko 89.7 fm, explained that students in 400, 500 and 600 levels would resume before others. Read more
UNILAG visitation panel begins sitting (Nation)
The Special Visitation Panel set up by the Federal Government to look into the crisis rocking the University of Lagos (UNILAG), on Monday began it’s sitting behind closed doors and collated memoranda submitted by members of the public.
The panel, which has two weeks to submit its report, had issued a notice calling for memoranda shortly after its inauguration on Wednesday, last week by the Education Minister, Mallam Adamu Adamu.
It was observed that the box, where the memoranda were dropped was emptied and taken into the Chambers at about 2 pm in accordance with the time given by the panel. Read more
Aviation unions embark on peaceful protest at Lagos airport (Vanguard)
Aviation unions, namely, Air Transport Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, ATSSSAN, National Union of Air Transport Employee, NUATE, Association of Aviation Professionals, ANAP, and Nigerian Union of Pensioners, NUP, airport branch, Monday embarked on a peaceful walk around the major roads at the Muritala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
The action, which is a directive from the national headquarters of the various unions, was programmed to take place simultaneously at all the country’s airport.
The unions are protesting the manner the current Aviation Minister, Senator Hadi Sirika is carrying out the concessioning of some of the country’s major airports without carrying the aviation workers unions along. Read more
Man docked for allegedly killing neighbour (Guardian)
A 23-year-old Butcher Jamilu Bala on Monday appeared before a Plateau State High Court for allegedly killing his neighbour, Dakai David.
The accused, who is married to two wives and a father of seven residing at Congo Russia, Jos North Area of Plateau state allegedly committed the crime on May 6.
The police prosecutor, Mr O.S Okpuru, told the court that Bala in a group of other boys known as ‘Tambarawa Boys’ attacked the deceased in a Tricycle and stabbed him with a knife which eventually led to his death. Read more
Supreme Court affirms Yahaya Bello’s election as Kogi governor (Punch)
The Supreme Court on Monday affirmed the election of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State.
A seven-man panel of the court led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, made this declaration in two judgments dismissing the separate appeals filed by the Peoples Democratic Party and the Socialist Democratic Party.
The apex court affirmed the earlier July 4, 2020 judgments of the Court of Appeal in Abuja and verdicts of the election petition tribunal, which had both upheld Bello’s victory at the poll. Read more
Ember months: FRSC sensitises road users on safety precautions (Punch)
As the last four months of the year 2020 approaches, the Federal Road Safety Corps says it has begun its nationwide year-end campaign to sensitise road users on safety measures to forestall accidents and incidents during the ember months.
This was contained in a statement titled, ‘Oyeyemi Issues Travel Advisory As Frsc Begins Nationwide Ember Months Campaigns With The Theme Drive Safe And Stay Safe’ and made available to journalists on Monday.

Medic astonished as meter-long snake is pulled from mouth of patient (RT)
Doctors in the Russian Republic of Dagestan were forced to put a woman under anaesthesia after a snake slithered into her mouth while she was sleeping.
Video filmed in the hospital captured the moment a snake, over a meter in length, was pulled from the patients mouth. According to Russian media, the woman was sleeping under a tree in the courtyard of her house, when the incident happened.
In the clip, the medic holding the snake looks shocked as it is removed from the patient’s body, and placed in a bucket. Read more
Pranab Mukherjee: Former India president dies after Covid diagnosis (BBC)
India’s former president Pranab Mukherjee has died, 21 days after confirming that he had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.
The 84-year-old was in hospital to remove a clot in his brain, when it was discovered he also had Covid-19.
Before serving as president between 2012 and 2017, Mr Mukherjee held several important portfolios during his 51-year political career.
These included the finance, foreign and defence ministries.
His son Abhijit confirmed the the news in a tweet. Read more

High-level delegations flew from Israel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on the first-ever commercial flight between the Middle Eastern nations to put final touches on a controversial pact establishing open relations.
Top aides to US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were on board the direct flight from Tel Aviv to the UAE capital Abu Dhabi on Israel’s flag carrier El Al on Monday.
Flight LY971 flew over Saudi Arabia after Riyadh agreed to the Israeli request on Sunday – also a first.
The plane carrying the US and Israeli delegations to Abu Dhabi has the word “peace” written on it in English, Hebrew, and Arabic. Read more
Diplomat tapped to be PM vows reforms in crisis-hit Lebanon (CBC)
A Lebanese diplomat was appointed to form a new government on Monday after winning the backing of major political parties in the crisis-hit country, which is still reeling from a devastating explosion that killed and wounded thousands of people.
President Michel Aoun asked Lebanon’s ambassador to Germany, Mustapha Adib, to form a new government after he secured 90 votes among the legislators in the 128-member parliament.
The consultations were being held hours before French President Emmanuel Macron was due to arrive for a two day-visit, during which he is expected to press Lebanese officials to formulate a new political pact to lift the country out of its multiple crises. At least 190 people died and 6,000 were injured in the Aug. 4 blast, which devastated the city’s port and caused widespread damage to residential and commercial areas in the capital. Read more

Minimum wage, no NOC: Qatar announces changes to labour law (Aljazeera)
Qatar has scrapped a rule requiring employers’ consent to change jobs and said it will also implement a basic monthly minimum wage of 1,000 Qatari riyals ($274).
Sunday’s landmark announcement by the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs (MADLSA) is the latest in a series of labour reforms by the country whose treatment of migrant workers and its human rights record have been under the spotlight since it was awarded the hosting of football’s 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Under Qatar’s “kafala” (Arabic word for sponsorship) system, migrant workers needed to obtain their employer’s permission – a no-objection certificate (NOC) – before changing jobs, a law that rights activists said tied their presence in the country to their employers and led to abuse and exploitation. Lady Gaga led this year’s MTV VMAs, winning five awards, while BTS and Ariana Grande won four each and The Weeknd won video of the year.

Ex-Flying Eagles goalkeeper, Felagha, dies at 26 (Punch)
A former goalkeeper of Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, John Felagha, is dead.
He died in Senegal on Sunday, according to the Nigeria Football Federation.
He was aged 26.

Italy boss Roberto Mancini insists he is not interested in returning to club football before his work with the Azzurri is complete.
Reports in Italy had claimed a number of Premier League clubs had contacted former Manchester City boss Mancini.
Mancini has also coached teams including Lazio, Inter, Galatasaray and Zenit, and he took on the Italy job in 2018 with the national team at a low ebb. Read more

World Athletics (WA) has expressed its displeasure over the lingering crisis rocking the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) after the court ruling instituted by the embattled AFN President, Shehu Gusau against the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development.
The WA made their position known in a letter addressed to the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare which was signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of WA, Jon Ridgeon.

Bayer Leverkusen manager Peter Bosz has confirmed that he does not expect Kai Havertz to return for training this summer amid speculation the young midfielder is on the verge of joining Chelsea.
Frank Lampard has been keen to make up for lost time in the wake of Chelsea’s two-window transfer ban and the Blues have set their sights on finalising a move for Havertz after wrapping up deals up Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva.
It’s understood Havertz agreed a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge earlier this month and Chelsea will reportedly pay Leverkusen €80million (£72m) up front plus a further €20m (£18m) in bonuses for the 21-year-old German. Read more
