Police arrest landlady’s daughter for stealing tenant’s property (Guardian)

The Niger State Police Command has said that on May 30, 2025, at about 4 pm, a report received at Bosso Division indicated that on May 27, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m., a victim/tenant who resides at El-Waziri area of Minna returned home from work and noticed that unknown persons had broken into his house and stolen household items such as electrical appliances and other property to an unknown destination.

According to a statement issued to newsmen in Minna by the spokesperson of the command, SP Wasiu Abiodun disclosed that the items included a 32-inch LG plasma television set, an electric cooking stove, a half bag of charcoal, two extension boxes, a 6kg gas cylinder, an electric blender, three kettles, three cooking pots, two electric pressing irons, three rubber basins, eighteen pieces of wrappers, rubber cups, rubber baskets, a set of white coolers, and other kitchen utensils, all estimated to cost one million naira.

The statement stressed that as a result of this, an intelligence-led investigation was carried out, leading to the arrest of a suspect on June 3, 2025, named Nana Mubarak, 24 years old, a female from Angwan-Biri, who is the daughter of the landlady, a housewife, and nursing mother. A search was conducted in her house, and all the stolen items except the plasma television were recovered. Read more

On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu conferred national honours on prominent citizens, including Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), and Catholic Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah.

The gesture singles out recipients (living and dead) for their service to the country, particularly with regard to the June 12 democratic struggle.

President Bola Tinubu has granted a full presidential posthumous pardon to the late environmental rights activist, Ken Saro Wiwa, and eight other Ogoni men, also known as Ogoni Nine.

Tinubu announced the pardon to the nine Ogonis, who he described as national heroes, while exercising his powers under the Prerogative of Mercy during an address to a joint session of the National Assembly in commemoration of Democracy Day on Thursday.

Lagos State Governorship Candidate of Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has expressed dismay over commissioning of the Lagos-Calabar coastal road that is barely five percent done by President Bola Ahmed Tunubu, saying that it was not possible to commission such a project and still gloat over it as having done anything spectacular.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road is a 700 kilometers project that is expected to take off from Victoria Island, Lagos down to Calabar, in the South South Nigeria.

Libya denies claims of official contact with Egypt over ‘Convoy of Steadfastness’ (MEMO)

Abdulhadi Al-Hweij, foreign minister in the eastern Libyan government appointed by the Parliament, said there had been no official contact with Egypt regarding the Maghreb “Caravan of Steadfastness” entering through the shared land border.

Speaking to RT, Al-Hweij said: “Every country has its own particularities and its own laws that govern it,” stressing that his government acts within Libyan law and national sovereignty.

Japan’s Defense Ministry said Wednesday a Chinese J-15 fighter jet’s “abnormal approaches” brought it within 147 feet of Maritime Self-Defense Force P-3C surveillance planes over the past weekend.

There were two close calls that came within a short enough distance to risk collision and the delay in publicly announcing them was to analyze what happened.

“The government has raised serious concerns with the Chinese side, including to the Chinese ambassador in Tokyo, through the vice minister of foreign affairs, and has strongly urged them to prevent such incidents from recurring,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said at a Thursday news conference.
