Naira makes fresh gains against dollar at official market (DailyTrust)
The Naira on Monday gained N28.34 at the official market, trading at N1,468.99 to the dollar.
Data from the official trading platform of the FMDQ Exchange revealed that the gain represented a 1.89 per cent appreciation for the Naira.
The percentage increase is impressive when compared to the previous trading date on Friday, May 17, 2024 when the local currency traded at N1,497.33 to the dollar. Read more

Kanu, who was visibly irked by the decision of the court to allow him to attend his trial from the detention facility of the Department of State Services, DSS, vented his anger on the lead counsel that appeared for the Federal Government, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, labelling him a terrorist. The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Monday, received in audience Afrobeat star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, who was on a courtesy visit to the Senate President.

The group under the aegis of the “Traders’ Welfare Union of Nigeria,” on Monday in Benin City, blamed the hike in food prices across markets in Edo State on alleged illegal activities and deprivation they are facing from leaders of market unions in the state.
Members of the Union, who brandished placards with various inscriptions such as “Edo people say no to evil unions in our markets” and “Evil unions in Edo markets are responsible for the hike in food prices,” stated this during their protest to the Secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council.
Speaking on behalf of the people, Comrade Lucky Orukpe, President of the traders’ union, vowed that his union is ready to expose illegal unions in Edo markets. Read more
3 men arraigned for assaulting medical doctor in Ogun (Channels)
Three men were on Monday arraigned before an Abeokuta Chief Magistrate Court for assaulting a medical doctor while performing his duty.
The defendants, James Akode, 57, Lekan Ajeigbe, 35 and Rilwan Roheem, 33, whose address were not provided, were arraigned on a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and unlawful damage.

Police hunt fleeing cult leader in Ogun (Punch)
The Ogun State Police Command says it has begun a manhunt for a fleeing leader of the Eiye confraternity simply identified as Lekan following a police raid of their hideout in the Ifo Local Government Area of the state.
This is just as the police said it arrested four members of the confraternity during a secret cult meeting on Sunday.
The command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, in a telephone interview with PUNCH Online on Monday, disclosed that the wanted cult leader has been on the watch list of the police following his alleged involvement in a murder case currently being investigated by the command. Read more

Haiti’s main international airport reopened Monday for the first time in nearly three months after relentless gang violence forced authorities to close it to all traffic in early March.
The reopening of the Toussaint-Louverture airport in the capital of Port-au-Prince is expected to help ease a critical shortage of medications and other basic supplies since the country’s main seaport remains paralyzed.
However, only Sunrise Airways, a local carrier, is flying in and out of Port-au-Prince for now. U.S.-based airlines are not expected to start doing so until late May or early June. Read more

The US and Niger have agreed that American troops will leave the country “no later” than 15 September, they announced in a joint statement on Sunday.
They said the two countries had “reached a disengagement agreement to effect the withdrawal of U.S. forces, which has already begun”.

Scottie Scheffler’s court date has been delayed until 3 June following his arrest during the US PGA Championship at Valhalla last week.
The 27-year-old was arrested on Friday 17 May after trying to drive into Valhalla Golf Club in heavy traffic and his arraignment date had been set for Tuesday, 21 May.
Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding traffic signals from an officer. Read more

MLB investigating ex-Angels infielder David Fletcher for alleged gambling (UPI)
MLB launched an investigation on Monday into claims that former Los Angeles Angels infielder David Fletcher used an illegal bookie to gamble on sports, a source familiar with the investigation told UPI.
The investigation was first reported by ESPN, which reported on Friday that Fletcher bet on sports with the bookmaker, who also took wagers from Shohei Ohtani’s former Interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara. Fletcher was teammates with Ohtani for six years.
ESPN reported that Fletcher did not bet on baseball. Read more
