Policeman remanded for allegedly raping teenager inside Lagos office (Punch)

An Ogba Magistrate Court in Lagos State, on Tuesday, ordered the remand of 56-year-old policeman Owolabi Akinlolu at the Maximum Correctional Centre Kirikiri for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl in his office.

Owolabi, a Deputy Superintendent of Police at the Ogudu Police Station in Lagos, allegedly raped the survivor in his office after promising to help recover her phone, which was stolen by one-chance robbers while she was returning from Ikeja with her grandmother and siblings.

Akinlolu reportedly summoned the teenager to his office on June 29, claiming they had apprehended the suspect who had stolen her phone two weeks earlier. Read more 

Court remands four for N12m SUV theft (Punch)

A Lagos State Magistrate Court sitting in Tinubu Square on Monday ordered the remand of four men at the correctional centre for allegedly stealing an SUV vehicle valued N12m.

The defendants are Wale Odunlami, Salami Isiaka, Tajudeen Yekini, and Nurudeen Ogunmola. They were remanded in the custody of the correctional centre respectively by Magistrate Mrs Ayoku Gbajumo, after they all pleaded not guilty to the charges made against them by the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex, Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos.

They were arraigned before the court on two counts of conspiracy, stealing and receiving stolen cars preferred against them by the police. Read more

Uber driver killed, body dumped on Lagos road (Punch)

The Lagos State chapter of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria has mourned the death of a 42-year-old e-hailing driver, Yusfat Ayinde, who was stabbed to death by unidentified assailants on Friday.

The chairman, Jaiyesinmi Azeez, who confirmed the incident, told PUNCH Metro on Monday that the deceased was on duty in the evening when he was attacked.

He said Ayinde received a ride request through the e-hailing app and arrived at the designated location, where he was ambushed by a group of hoodlums. Read more

Bamise: Court fixes March 3 for adoption of final addresses (Punch)

A Lagos State High Court in Tafawa Balewa Square has adjourned the trial of a Lagos State Bus Rapid Transport, driver Andrew  Ominikoron, accused of allegedly raping and murdering a 22-year-old fashion designer Oluwabamise Ayanwole, to March 3, 2025, for the adoption of final written address.

The trial judge, Justice Sherifat Sonaike, fixed the date following the absence of the defence counsel, Mr Abayomi Omotubora.

On the last adjourned date on January 30, 2025, the court had also adjourned the case till February 10, 2025, for the adoption of the final written address. Read more

Group seeks IGโ€™s intervention over police abduction of Lagos bizmen (Punch)

A group, Human Rights Initiative for the Downtrodden, has urged the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate and prosecute some officers of the Intelligence Response Team attached to the FCIID, Alagbon, for their alleged abduction of one Joseph Ikechukwu and his friend Adeniyi Solomon.

PUNCH Metro reported on Friday that the heavily pregnant wife of Ikechukwu had narrated how her husband was abducted on the premises of the FCIID, Alagbon where they had gone for clarification and briefing following his initial arrest.

Mrs Ikechukwu had alleged that the police, who arrested her husband over a dispute on land commission with another man, extorted her husband and the wife to the tune of N5m.ย Read more

Lagos carpenter remanded for defiling nine-year-old girl (Punch)

A Magistrate Court sitting in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State has ordered the remand of a carpenter at the Kirikiri Correctional Facility for allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl in the Ipaja area of the state.

PUNCH Metro learnt from a statement by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency on Sunday that the suspect was arrested following an escalation of the matter by a popular comedienne known as Princess.

Princess had in a social media post alleged that a man raped a nine-year-old girl while urging her followers within the area to visit the scene to save the victim. Read more

Police arrest murder suspect, foil robbery in Lagos (Punch)

The Nigeria Police Force says it has made breakthroughs in its ongoing crackdown on crime, arresting multiple suspects involved in murder, armed robbery, and illegal possession of firearms in Lagos State.

The Force, which has continued to implement proactive strategies to curb crime nationwide, says these latest operations underscore its commitment to public safety and security.

In a Sunday statement titled โ€œEffective policing: Police arrests murder suspect, recover exhibits, makes other preventive arrests,โ€ the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that officers carried out several successful operations between February 5 and 7, 2025, leading to key arrests and the recovery of weapons. LAWMA arrests 25 for illegal waste disposal (Punch)

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority has arrested over 25 individuals for illegal dumping, including six vehicle owners who were caught using their vehicles to dispose of large volumes of waste.

The state Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a post accompanied by videos on X.com on Saturday.

Wahab disclosed that LAWMAโ€™s Managing Director, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, had mobilised the officials in response to a public complaint raised on social media regarding illegal dumping activities at Abati Primary School along Shasha Road in the Alimosho area of the state.ย Read more

Lagos hotelier in police net for sodomising teenager for N5k (Punch)

The Zone 2 Command of the Nigeria Police Force has arrested a 46-year-old Managing Director of Leuven Empire Hotel and Suites, Macdonald Opara, for allegedly sodomising a 16-year-old boy.

The Zoneโ€™s spokesperson, Ayuba Umma, who disclosed this while addressing newsmen on Wednesday said, the victimโ€™s father (name withheld) submitted a petition to the Assistant Inspector General of Police on January 23, 2025, alleging that Opara engaged in unlawful sexual acts with his son.

She said the victim reportedly confided in his mother after Opara threatened him with psychological harm if he disclosed the incident.ย Read more

Wife accuses police of abducting husband in Lagos (Punch)

A pregnant woman based in Lagos State, Vivian Ikechukwu, has accused some police officer attached to the Intelligence Response Team of the Nigeria Police Force of abducting her husband, Joseph Ikechukwu, alongside his friend, Solomon Adeniyi, on the premises of the Force CIID, Alagbon, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt in an exclusive interview with Mrs Ikechukwu on Thursday, that her husbandโ€™s ordeal began after he sold one of his landed properties and a friend who was privy to the transaction requested a 10 per cent commission from the proceeds of the sale.

She stated that her husband refused to give the friend a commission because he was not the one who brought the buyer for the land, a decision which angered the said friend who allegedly threatened to deal with the husband. Read more

Driver arrested for injuring LASTMA officer (Punch)

A yet-to-be-identified truck driver has been arrested by police operatives in Lagos for causing grievous body injuries to an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority which led to the amputation of the officer in the Ojodu Berger area of the state.

According to the LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, the incident happened on Tuesday.

Taofiq stressed that the officer was on his way to official duty when the trailer, registered in Bauchi State, lost control while speeding along the Ogba corridor, and collided with the officer. Read more

Lagos task force arrests 12 suspected land grabbers (Nation)

The Lagos State Task force has arrested and arraigned 12 suspected land grabbers accused of terrorising residents and business operators in Alausa, Ikeja.

The suspects were reportedly apprehended following credible intelligence that they obstructed lawful occupants from conducting their legitimate activities.

While wielding dangerous weapons, they allegedly assaulted a hotel proprietor, Mr. Ashafa of Prestige Hotel, Ikeja.

Chairman of the Task force, Chief Superintendent of Police Adetayo Akerele, who led the operation, warned that the state would not tolerate land-grabbing. Read more

Two killed, many injured as gunmen invade Lagos community (Nation)

Two people have been killed and many others injured after armed men invaded Ijegun Egba community in the Oriade Local Council Development of Lagos State.

The gunmen were said to have attacked the community on Monday and Tuesday from a neighbouring riverine village over a dispute that began last Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Gbenga Areagbo, 40, and one Oladapo Olukoya.

A short video seen by our correspondent showed one of the victims lying lifeless on the ground with his head smashed and bloodied. Read more
