Poly lecturer jailed five years for diverting study grant (Punch)
A former academic staff member of Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Kebbi State, Muhammed Sani Nuhu, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment for deviously allotting over N6 million belonging to the polytechnic to himself.
This was after the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission had secured his conviction.
According to a statement by the Commission Spokesperson, Azuka Ogugua, on Tuesday, in a 4-count brought before Hon. Justice Hassan Usman of the Kebbi State High Court, Birnin Kebbi Judicial Division, the Commission stated that Nuhu, conferred a corrupt advantage on himself when he converted into personal use the sums of “two million Naira (N2,000,000:00) in 2015 and four million, one hundred and seventy-three thousand, four hundred Naira (N4,173,400:00) in 2016.” Read more
Mixed reactions trail new Sokoto marital expenses law (DailyTrust)
Residents of Sokoto State are now debating the recent amendment of a law which regulates spending on wedding and naming ceremonies in the state.
The law tagged “Regulation and Control of Expenses of Marriages, Naming and Circumcision Ceremonies and for Purposes Connected Therewith-2022” was awaiting the assent of Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
The law was first enacted in 1992 and reviewed in 1996. The co-sponsor of the bill and member, representing Yabo constituency, Abubakar Shehu Yabo, said the law is aimed at reducing the extravagances in organising these ceremonies in the state. Read more
Assault: Seun Kuti released after 7 days in Police detention (Vanguard)
Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, was yesterday, released on bail from Police custody, seven days after he reported himself at the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, Yaba, Lagos, over the assault allegation against him.
Before his release, last night, his lawyers, Mr. Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, and Mr. Kunle Adegoke, had hinted that he would be released, yesterday, having met all the conditions for his bail.

Cultural practices will tame drug abuse among youths – Marwa (Leadership)
Chairman/chief executive officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), says cultural practices can be used to tackle drug abuse among Nigerian youths.
Marwa stated this at the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO) annual public lecture, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja yesterday.
Marwa who was represented by the director, Drug Demand Reduction of NDLEA, Anthonia Ngozi Madubuike said, “Culture, drug abuse and the future of Nigerian youths are interconnected and have significant implications for the development and wellbeing of the Culture plays a vital role in shaping the values, beliefs, norms and and behaviours of a society including its youth. Lagos moves to tackle rising inflation through agriculture (Nation)
Lagos State is set to control food inflation.
Special Adviser to the governor on Agriculture, Dr. Oluwarotimi Fashola, said the government has increased input supply to farmers.
Speaking after distribution of input in Eti-Osa Local Government under 2022 Agricultural Value Chains Enterprise Activation and Farmers’ Support programme, Fashola said the state is concerned food inflation remained a challenge.
While it might not be easy to control inflation at national level, Fashola noted soaring prices of food items were a concern for the state economy. Read more
Imo Catholic priest regains freedom, 2 days after abduction (Guardian)
The kidnapped priest of Christ the King Parish, Ezinachi, Ugwuago, Okigwe Catholic Diocese, Okigwe Local Council of Imo State, Fr. Jude Maduka, yesterday, regained freedom from his abductors.
Maduka was kidnapped Sunday morning by gunmen, who invaded his home as he was preparing for mass, and took him to an unknown place. A source from the parish told The Guardian that the gunmen had set Maduka free after security and other persons launched intensive search and manhunt for the abductors.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said: “Rev Fr. Jude Maduka, who was kidnapped Sunday as he was preparing for mass, has been set free. He has reunited with the members of the Christ the King Parish, Ezinachi, Okigwe Diocese of the Catholic Church.” Read more

The Senate has confirmed the nomination of Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa for reappointment as the Chairman and CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) for a second term.
President Muhammadu Buhari had written to the Senate requesting that the Upper Chamber confirm her appointment.

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu, has warned the party’s anointed speakership aspirants of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abass, to stop parading himself as elected speaker.
He handed the warning when Abass led a delegation of over 50 members-elect across party divides on a thank-you-visit on the National Working Committee (NWC) at the national secretariat in Abuja, yesterday.

Where The Wild Things Are has been named the greatest children’s book of all time, according to a poll by the BBC.
Voted for by children’s authors, illustrators, editors, publishers, academics, librarians, writers and readers from across the world, the top 100 were unveiled on Tuesday (23 May) afternoon.
Maurice Sendak’s 1963 adventure took the top spot in BBC Culture’s list, with Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Pippi Longstocking, The Little Prince and The Hobbit making up the top five. Read more

On Tuesday, Hanks, and Wilson, both 66, appeared together on the red carpet at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival for the world premiere of the new movie Asteroid City, in which they both appear.
Wilson, who married the Forrest Gump star in 1988, wore a black dress to the event adorned with a cape and silver jewels. USC’s Norman Lear Center report urges Hollywood to re-examine gun violence in films & TV shows (Deadline)
A new report from USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center makes the case that the depiction of gun violence in the media is fueling gun violence in real life, while the “on-screen representation of characters using guns desensitizes children to the consequences of guns but increases their interest in them.”
“I couldn’t be prouder that the Center which bears my name is releasing this report about gun safety and the entertainment industry,” Lear said in a statement. “How guns are portrayed on screen should reflect the public health crisis we are in and help portray responsible gun ownership.” Read more
Russia claims 70 attackers killed in cross-border Belgorod raid (AlJazeera)
Russia has said more than 70 attackers were killed in its operation to repel cross-border raiders who entered the country’s Belgorod region from Ukraine and battled with Russian forces for an estimated 24 hours before retreating from Russian territory.
Russia said it had deployed jets and artillery on Tuesday to destroy the armed groups that penetrated the border region in the most audacious attack on Russian territory since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine last year.
Authorities said 13 people were injured by artillery and mortar fire during the fighting and that a woman died during evacuations on Monday. A second civilian was reported killed in the village of Kozinka. Read more
Guyana school fire that killed 19 was lit by student angry over confiscated phone (ABC)
A fire in a school dormitory in Guyana that killed 19 children was lit by a student after school authorities confiscated her mobile phone, police say.
The children, mostly Indigenous girls, died about midnight on Monday, most at the scene.
“A female student is suspected of having set the devastating fire because her cellular phone was taken away by the dorm’s mother and a teacher,” police said in a statement. Read more

Team Nigeria has clinched the first position at the just concluded 2023 Senior, Junior and Cadet African Wrestling Championship, which was held recently in Hammamet in Tunisia.
Team Nigeria won six gold and four silver medals in the senior category, two gold in junior category and one gold in beach wrestling.

Carlos Queiroz has drawn a line under Qatar’s 2022 World Cup campaign, saying the team have entered a “new era” with the goal to make the country proud at next year’s Asian Cup.
Qatar, the defending champions, will host the continent’s showpiece for the third time and first since 2011, when it stages the 24-team tournament from January 12 to February 10. The competition was initially scheduled for China this summer.

Alyssa Thomas had 22 points and 10 rebounds while DeWanna Bonner added 15 points to help the Connecticut Sun beat the Washington Mystics 88-81 on Tuesday night.
Connecticut created some separation midway through the fourth quarter by going on a 10-2 run, capped by a three-point play by Brionna Jones for a 75-67 lead. Tiffany Hayes started the run by making a 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down and a transition foul led to a four-point possession after Bonner’s free throw and Jones’ 3-pointer.
