President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned writer Mabel Segun, who died on Thursday, just a month after celebrating her 95th birthday.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), Tinubu extended his condolences to Segun’s family, the literary community and her numerous admirers.
Segun, a celebrated poet, playwright and author of children’s books, left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s literary landscape. She pioneered children’s literature in the country, founding the Children’s Literature Association of Nigeria in 1978 and establishing the Children’s Documentation and Research Centre in Ibadan in 1990. #Her debut book, My Father’s Daughter, published in 1965, garnered global acclaim and continues to inspire aspiring writers and students.
President Tinubu praised Segun’s extraordinary contributions to literature, describing her legacy as enduring and impactful. He prayed for the repose of her soul and divine comfort for her grieving family.
Mabel Segun’s death marks the end of an era for Nigerian literature, but her works and influence will continue to resonate for generations to come.
