Customs agent hospitalised as worker absconds with customer’s money (Punch)
A customs-licensed clearing agent, Suleiman Mohammed, has cried out for help after one of his workers, Yinka Afolabi, allegedly absconded with N1.8m meant for the clearance of a Toyota Camry. Mohammed, who was locked up in a police cell at the Tin Can Island, Apapa, Lagos State, for about six days, said efforts to trace the suspect had been abortive. Read more
Navy shuts illegal maritime academy, arrests proprietor, teachers (Punch)
The Nigerian Navy Ship Jubilee, Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, has sealed an illegal maritime institution, Merchant Seaman Academy, and apprehended four persons including the school’s proprietor, Mr Adams Pius, in the Essien Udim Local Government Area of the state. PUNCH Metro learnt that the school, whose academic activities had been stopped in 2013, allegedly resumed in 2016, using “unwholesome strategies to defraud innocent Nigerian youths” who sought admission into higher institutions through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board. The Kano State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 34 suspected political thugs between October 2 and 5, 2018. The command, in a statement on Sunday, said while 18 of them were screened and released, 16 others, who were indicted after a thorough investigation, would be prosecuted. Read more

Fuel spill feared as cargo ships collide off Corsica (Guardian)
A cargo ship rammed into another freight vessel near the French Mediterranean island of Corsica early Sunday, causing no injuries but causing a leak which officials say is most likely fuel. The Ulysse, operated by the Tunisian operator CTN, struck the Cyprus-based CLS Virgina while it was anchored about 30 kilometres (20 miles) off the northern tip of the island at around 7:30 am, the regional naval authority said. Court remands 22-year-old for stealing cows (Punch)
A 22-year-old man, Labiru Umar, of Doka village in the Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State has been arraigned before a Katsina Senior Magistrates’ Court for criminal conspiracy and armed robbery. While armed with a gun, Umar and four others, now at large, were said to have on September 7, 2018, invaded the house of one Liman Suleiman of Unguwar Doka village, where they allegedly stole three cows. Woman accuses Lagos hospital of killing son with wrong medication (Punch)
A mother, Oluwaseun Folorunsho, has accused a private medical facility in Lagos State, Oak Hospital, of killing her one-year-old son, Ogooluwa. The 43-year-old mother claimed that workers at the hospital prescribed and administered drugs meant for her four-year-old son, Imole, to Ogooluwa, adding that it was what led to his death. Read more
Police arraign sexagenarian, teenagers for sodomy (Punch)
The police on Friday arraigned a sexagenarian, Rabiu Tanko, and two teenagers, Mohammed Samiu and Musa Mustapha, alleged to have been engaged in sodomy. Tanko, 62; Samiu, 18; and Mustapha, 16, were brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos on two counts of conspiracy and having unlawful sexual intercourse. Read more
Man jailed for stealing girlfriend’s phone (Punch)
An Ogba Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 26-year-old man, Ifeanyi Chijioke, to one month imprisonment for stealing a phone valued at N150,000 and a sum of N20,000. The police arraigned Chijioke on one count of stealing. The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge. The magistrate, W.A. Salami, gave Chijioke, who was said to be a first time offender, an option of two months’ community service. Read more
