Protest in Ajah as Inspector accidentally kills man (Nation)
Angry youths on Wednesday morning besieged the police station in Ajah to protest the killing of a young man by an Inspector.
The victim, identified as Gafaru Buraimoh, a resident of Happy Land Estate in Ajah, was killed by a stray bullet from the trigger-happy Inspector.
It was gathered that Buraimoh was patronising a Point of Sale (POS) vendor when the bullet from the Inspector, who was among cops pursuing black market fuel sellers, hit him.
Although the incident was said to have occurred around 11:30 pm on Tuesday, youths who heard about it gathered at the Elemoro Area Command in protest from 8am on Wednesday.
It was gathered that the protesting youths blocked the expressways and made it impossible for vehicles to pass, thereby preventing those going to work from getting to their destination. Read more
NJC Reinstates Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia as Judge of Federal High Court (ThisDay)
The National Judicial Council (NJC) has reinstated Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia as a judge of the Federal High Court.
In a circular dated December 5, 2022 titled “Reinstatement of Honourable Justice RN Ofili-Ajumogobia to the Federal High Court Bench”, signed by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, stated that the reinstatement takes instant effect, and there shall be consequential posting.
The 3-paragraph circular reads “Your Lordships are by this Circular letter notified that at the Meeting of the National Judicial Council held on the 1st of December, 2022, the Council reinstated the Hon. Justice R. N. Ofili-Ajumogobia as a Judicial Officer.”
“The reinstatement takes instant effect and there shall be consequential posting.”
Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 15-count charge bordering on money laundering and breach of public trust. Read more

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has confirmed the detention of Oladipo-Daniel Oyebanjo, aka D’Banj, over an ongoing investigation into the diversion of N-Power programme funds.
The Commission’s spokesperson Mrs Azuka Ogugua said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.
Ogugua said that the investigation followed numerous petitions on the diversion of N-Power funds running into billions of naira.
She said many N-Power beneficiaries had complained over the non-receipt of the monthly stipends in spite of payment by the Federal Government. Read more

“They want us out of business”, agents kick against CBN’s directives on withdrawals (Vanguard)
Mobile money operators and the organised banks’ customers have expressed their opposition to the new Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, regulations on withdrawals, saying the Bank wants to send them out of business.
The apex bank had restricted cash withdrawals from over-the-counter, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) to N100,000 and N500,000 per week for individuals and corporate organisations, respectively.
CBN disclosed this, yesterday, in a circular to all deposit money banks (DMBs) and other financial institutions (OFIs).

Colleagues of Nollywood actor, Akeem Adeyemi, have voiced out their discontent over an attack on the thespian at a movie set in Gbagada, Lagos.
In a video posted via actress Wunmi Toriola’s Instagram page on Tuesday, Akeem is seen with a bloodied face lamenting the brutal treatment meted against him by street touts.
“See, see what they did to my eyes, when it is not like I stole or did anything wrong, just because I came here to shoot,” he said in Yoruba.

Court dismisses case challenging Tinubu’s candidacy (Leadership)
A suit challenging the candidacy of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been dismissed by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday.
It was the fourth case to be dismissed by the courts in recent weeks.
In the latest case, suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/854/2022, Justice Fadima Aminu Muritala described the plaintiff, Elder Ngozika Ihuoma as a “meddlesome interloper having no locus standi to institute the suit”.
The presiding Judge, therefore, dismissed the case for being speculative after APC’s counsel, Julius Ishola Esq from Babatunde Ogala & Co had urged the Court to dismiss it with heavy cost for wasting judicial time. Read more
Audit Queries: Senate threatens to slash allocations of 100 MDAs (DailyTrust)
The Senate on Wednesday threatened to slash the allocations of about 100 government establishments, comprising ministries, departments and agencies that failed to respond to the queries raised against them in a report by the Office of the Auditor-General for the Federation.
Senate President Ahmad Lawan disclosed this after Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, Matthew Urhoghide (PDP, Edo) raised a point of order during plenary that agencies indicted in the audit report had refused to appear before his panel.
Urhoghide said his committee had invited heads of the affected agencies on several occasions to respond to queries raised in the Auditor-General’s report.
The lawmaker said sections 88 and 89 of the constitution empowered the parliament to summon federal government agencies to account for public funds they had spent. Read more
Time magazine names Ukraine’s Zelensky “Person of the Year’” (Guardian)
Time magazine named President Volodymyr Zelensky as well as “the spirit of Ukraine” as its 2022 person of the year on Wednesday, for the resistance the country has shown in the face of Russia’s invasion.
Calling Zelensky’s decision to remain in Kyiv and rally his country amid the ongoing war “fateful,” Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal said this year’s decision was “the most clear-cut in memory.”
Since Russia’s February 24 invasion, Zelensky has delivered daily speeches followed not only by Ukrainians but by citizens and governments around the globe.
He has appeared on the frontlines and recently celebrated in the streets of Kherson when Ukraine pushed Russia from the critical southern city.
“His information offensive shifted the geopolitical weather system, setting off a wave of action that swept the globe,” Felsenthal wrote in announcing the winner. Read more
Janis Hunter Gaye, wife of Motown legend Marvin Gaye, dies at 66 (THR)
Janis Hunter Gaye, the second wife of Motown legend Marvin Gaye and the inspiration for several of his songs, died Saturday of an undisclosed cause at her home in Rhode Island, her family announced. She was 66.
Hunter Gaye was introduced to the singer by producer Ed Townsend during a 1973 recording session at Hitsville West in Los Angeles for his album Let’s Get It On, which was released that year. Gaye at the time was married to Anna Gordy, the sister of Motown founder Berry Gordy; Hunter Gaye was 17, he was 34.
Gaye wrote the song “Jan” for his future wife and recorded it for his 1974 album, Marvin Gaye Live!, and his 1976 album, I Want You, has been described as “a romantic and erotic tribute” to her. His 1977 disco single, “Got to Give It Up,” which reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, featured her on background vocals. They were married that year. Read more
Wednesday faces backlash over Jenna Ortega’s COVID dance scene (NME)
The Netflix series Wednesday has been criticised after it was revealed Jenna Ortega had COVID while filming the show’s viral dance sequence.
In episode four, titled Woe What A Night, Wednesday (Ortega) and her fellow students attend Nevermore Academy’s annual Rave’N dance, where she performs a dance routine soundtracked by The Cramps single ‘Goo Goo Muck’.
Speaking to NME, Ortega revealed she had COVID while filming the scene. “I’d gotten the song [‘Goo Goo Muck’] about a week before and I just pulled from whatever I could… it’s crazy because it was my first day with COVID so it was awful to film.
“Yeah, I woke up and – it’s weird, I never get sick and when I do it’s not very bad – I had the body aches. I felt like I’d been hit by a car and that a little goblin had been let loose in my throat and was scratching the walls of my oesophagus. They were giving me medicine between takes because we were waiting on the positive result.”

Barry Pepper takes the lead in feature film “Bring Him to Me,” which is now shooting in Queensland, Australia, under director Luke Sparke (“Occupation Rainfall”). The picture is a mob thriller written by Tom Evans and which also stars Sam Neill and Rachel Griffiths.
Under orders from a ruthless crime boss, a getaway driver must battle his conscience and drive a young and unsuspecting passenger to an uncertain fate. Evans’ script was inspired by the traumatic scene in Martin Scorsese’s “Casino” in which Nicky Santoro (portrayed by Joe Pesci) unwittingly turns up for a meeting in a cornfield and things go South.
“I’ve been fascinated by morally gray stories like ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Drive,’ so when presented with the chance to dive deep into the underworld, I couldn’t resist bringing my own flavor to the genre, toeing the lines of film noir and graphic novels,” said Sparke. He is best known for comedy actioner “Red Billabong” and action thriller “Occupation Rainfall,” for which a sequel has been announced.

Eminem has beaten Taylor Swift as his music videos were the most played of 2022, video hosting service Vevo said.
The 50-year-old American rapper, real name Marshall Mathers, had almost 76 million views of his videos as he released his second greatest hits album Curtain Call 2 this year.
In May, The Real Slim Shady artist was also inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame and in November, his semi-autobiographical film 8 Mile celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Argentina’s vice president found guilty of fraud (DW)
Argentina’s vice president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner was found guilty of corruption by a federal court on Tuesday.
The 69-year-old polarizing politician was also sentenced to six years in prison in the highly-charged legal case relating to irregularities in the concession of road works.
Fernandez was found guilty of fraud for taking part in a scheme that embezzled $1 billion during her presidency. The vice president had been on trial since 2019 for allegedly defrauding the state during her two terms as president between 2007 and 2015.
The federal court also handed down a lifetime ban from holding public office. Read more
Eden Hazard retires from international football after Belgium’s World Cup exit (Metro)
Eden Hazard has announced his decision to retire from international football in the wake of Belgium’s early World Cup exit.
The 31-year-old was capped 126 times by Belgium, while his last appearance for the national team came as a late substitute in the 0-0 draw with Croatia last week, which resulted in his side being eliminated at the group stage.
Hazard had struggled for playing time ahead of the World Cup in Qatar, starting just two games for Real Madrid since the season started in August.

Eto’o apologises for ”violent altercation” with supporter at World Cup in Qatar (Sky)
Former Cameroon and Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o has apologised for what he described as a “violent altercation” at the World Cup in Qatar on Monday night.
A video circulating on social media appears to show the 41-year-old kneeing a man in the head outside Stadium 974 in Doha.
In a statement, Eto’o, who is the Cameroon FA president, said he was provoked by a fan who was “probably” an Algeria supporter as part of an ongoing campaign of harassment following Cameroon’s qualifying win over Algeria in March.
“After the Brazil-South Korea match, I had a violent altercation with a person who was probably an Algerian supporter,” Eto’o wrote on his social media channels. Read more

ATP fines British tennis association for Wimbledon ban of Russians, Belarusians (ABC)
Britain’s Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) has been fined 820,000 pounds ($1.49 million) by the ATP for banning male players from Russia and Belarus from multiple matches over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Players were banned from the UK’s summer grass-court tournaments held in the build-up to Wimbledon, which became the first grand slam tournament to ban individual competitors from the two countries.
The ATP and WTA were at the time upset with the decision and the LTA now feels the ATP has overreacted.
“The LTA is deeply disappointed with this,” the LTA said in a statement. Read more
LeBron James highlights Anthony Davis impact after star exits Los Angeles Lakers game (Mirror)
LeBron James may be the star of the Los Angeles Lakers and even the NBA for that matter, but he’s paid homage to how integral Anthony Davis is after they suffered in his absence.
James returned to Cleveland with the Lakers, but they suffered an early blow on Tuesday night as Davis checked out of the game early with ‘flu-like symptoms’. Davis left during the first quarter, and the Lakers struggled to cope without him on the court.
The Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Lakers 116-102 as Donovan Mitchell dropped a 43-point game, and Davis’ lack of presence was telling – especially in the fourth quarter. And James has opened up about how much Davis influences their results, claiming they have to change their whole game-plan when he’s not there.
The Lakers have been on the climb recently, shaking off a woeful start to the season and turning things around. They’re still on a 10-13 record after losing to the Cavaliers, but that’s only their third loss in their last 11 NBA outings. Read more
