A windstorm destroyed at least 50 houses in the Menkaat community (Shimankar district) of Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has predicted thundery and rainy weather activities across the nation from Monday to Wednesday, warning of possible flash floods in some areas.
NiMet’s weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja envisaged morning thunderstorms on Monday with moderate rains over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Katsina States in the northern region.

Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned proprietors and operators of event centres, nightclubs, recreational lounges and organisers of all categories of social gatherings within Lagos State to stop traffic obstruction.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, gave the warning during his strategic surveillance and on-the-spot inspections at various high-traffic corridors across the metropolis.
Bakare-Oki expressed dismay at the persistent trend in which glitzy events and festive assemblages flagrantly encroach on public roadways, thereby causing preventable traffic snarls, jeopardising emergency access routes, and subjecting commuters to stress. Read more

Former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, has warned that Nigeria’s social capital may be completely destroyed if President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) are returned to power in 2027.
He issued the warning in Sokoto during a grassroots’ mobilisation campaign organised by the opposition coalition platform, the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He declared his full support for the movement and vowed to help galvanise Nigerians to ensure the APC is voted out of office.

It described a viral video circulating on social media as misleading and outdated.
In a statement at the weekend by the Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the corporation explained that the footage, which was published by Sahara Reporters and amplified by several online platforms, did not originate from the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge corridor. Rather, it said, the incident occurred a year ago along a section of the old narrow gauge line at Erunmu, Ibadan, Oyo State. Read more

A woman in New Zealand has been arrested after a two-year-old girl was found in her luggage while she was travelling on a bus.
Police said officers were called to a bus stop in Kaiwaka, a small town in the north of the country, on Sunday after a passenger asked for access to the luggage compartment.

A new report from The Lancet reveals that three out of five liver cancer cases worldwide are linked to preventable risk factors, with obesity-related cases on the rise.
The analysis, published on 29th July, estimates that over 60% of liver cancers could be avoided by addressing viral hepatitis, excessive alcohol consumption, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a condition driven by excess fat in the liver.
Without urgent intervention, the number of new liver cancer cases is projected to nearly double by 2050, reaching 1.52 million annually, with deaths rising from 760,000 to 1.37 million in the same period. Read more

Erik Wunder, the driving creative force behind the black metal band Cobalt and gothic folk-rock project Man’s Gin, has died. Nachtmystium’s Blake Judd and Abigail Williams’ Ken Sorceron—both of whom toured had previously toured alongside Wunder—confirmed the news on social media. “I’m absolutely devastated, Judd wrote in an Instagram post. “Erik Wunder, rest easy brother. I am so grateful for our times together.” Wunder was 42.
In 2002, Wunder joined Grimness Enshroud, then the Greeley, Colorado-based solo project of Phil McSorley. They renamed the band to Cobalt shortly thereafter, with Wunder later telling Invisible Oranges, “we wanted a name that didn’t entail anything. Something basic. Something elemental. The name ‘Cobalt’ leaves room for any variety of directions.” Cobalt’s debut album, War Metal, came out in 2005. Wunder played all of the guitar, bass, and drum parts in the studio while McSorley handled lead vocal duties. Read more
