Finidi George has resigned from his role as the head coach of the Super Eagles, just weeks after his appointment in May.
Former Super Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye announced George’s departure in a social media post on Saturday, writing: “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”
George has since reportedly confirmed his resignation to reporters.
The former Enyimba FC manager’s departure comes amid a backdrop of internal strife, disappointing match results, and significant changes within the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The decision by the NFF to demote George and drastically reduce his salary appears to be the primary catalyst for his resignation. Reports indicate that George’s monthly salary was set to be slashed from N15 million to N5 million. Additionally, George was informed he would soon have to report to a new foreign technical adviser, who would be appointed to oversee the team’s strategies and management.
George’s tenure as head coach was marked by a series of lacklustre performances. Under his leadership, the Super Eagles managed only a 1-1 draw against South Africa and suffered a 2-1 defeat to the Republic of Benin in World Cup qualifying matches. These results have cast doubt on Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, prompting the NFF to seek external expertise.
George is said to have expressed his frustration with the NFF during a meeting with Sports Minister John Enoh. He highlighted the lack of support from the federation and the challenges in maintaining discipline within the team. George pointed out that several players had the backing of powerful NFF board members, making it difficult to enforce discipline without facing repercussions.
A significant issue raised by George was the commitment of Nigeria’s top players during crucial qualifiers. Finidi George’s resignation is a significant blow to the Super Eagles as they navigate the turbulent waters of World Cup qualification. The NFF’s decision to bring in a foreign technical adviser and overhaul the coaching staff underscores the urgency and gravity of the situation. As Nigeria looks to rebuild and refocus, the real reasons behind George’s resignation highlight the deeper issues within the team’s management and structure. The coming weeks will be crucial for the Super Eagles as they aim to regain their footing and revive their World Cup dreams.
The NFF has said the appointment of the foreign technical adviser will be done in the “coming weeks.”
