A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Obadiah Mailafia, has asked the Federal Government to reduce its importation of goods from South Africa as part of its response to the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians.
He added that reciprocity is a time-tested principle of international diplomatic practice and that Nigeria should not hesitate to take such decisive steps against the rainbow nation.
Many Nigerians in South Africa had come under series of xenophobic attacks. The latest attacks, which started on September 1, led to a diplomatic row between Nigeria and South Africa, forcing the Nigerian government to evacuate Nigerians who expressed interest to return home.
In the first batch, 187 of the 640 Nigerians returned to the country on Wednesday, while the second batch is expected on Sunday. Read more
