Ritual: 400-level UNIPORT student in Police net for killing ex-lover (Vanguard)
Rivers State Police Command has paraded one Damian Okoligwe, a 400-level student of Petroleum Engineering, University of Port Harcourt, UNIPORT, for allegedly killing his 20-year-old ex-lover for money ritual.
The suspect had reportedly killed, dismembered and sacked the body of his former girlfriend, Justina Otuene, a 300-level student in the Department of Bio-Chemistry, in the same institution.
The killing was reported at Ozuoba Police Station, by one of Damian’s neighbours, at Mgbu Oba Town, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state, under the division’s jurisdiction.
Addressing newsmen in Port Harcourt yesterday, the state Commissioner of Police, Nwonyi Emeka, informed that the sad incident was exposed by a neighbour to Damian, who had gone to the suspect’s backyard and was hit by offensive odour. He reported his experience to the police in Ozuoba. Read more

Police parade 24 suspects, 80-year-old man for defilement (Guardian)
The police in Jos, the Plateau State capital, yesterday, paraded 24 suspects, including an 80-year-old man, who allegedly defiled 11-year-old girl in his room.
Parading the suspects, the state Commissioner of Police (CP), Okoro Julius Alawari, said the command on Monday, October 9, received information that one Peter Ashom, 80, lured an 11yrs old girl into his room and attempted to have carnal knowledge of her under the pretense of sending her on errand.
He said the arrest was made possible through intelligence gathering, adding that other sets of the suspects were kidnappers; a kingpin among them was a 17-year-old secondary school dropout, who abducted and killed his neighbour’s five-year-old in Gyel Jos south Local Council. Read more
Prison Congestion: Magistrates barred from granting police remand orders (Punch)
Magistrates in Lagos State have been directed to stop granting remand orders to police to detain suspects in their cells.
The Deputy Chief Registrar, Legal, High Court of Lagos State, Joy Uggbomoiko, gave the directive in a circular dated October 18, 2023 and titled: “Re: Rejection of new inmates by correctional service.”
The circular indicated that the magistrates had earlier been given a directive to stop granting remand orders to the police to take suspects to prison, as the prison authorities, formally known as the Nigeria Correctional Service, had started rejecting inmates due to the congestion of their facilities. Land Dispute: Businessman accuses Task Force of disobeying court order (Vanguard)
Despite a court’s order to policemen attached to the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences not to encroach into an expanse of land in Eyin-Osa, in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State, one of the defendants in the suit, Mr. Abdulahi Mosadoluwa, has accused the policemen of disobeying the order.
A magistrate of a mobile court, Magistrate A. A. Adesanya, in the suite between the Attorney General of Lagos State and Abdullahi Mosadoluwa, Safuraimi Agbaja, Balogun Olainukan and Yusuf Oladimeji, has, last Wednesday, also ordered other parties in the land dispute not to erect any fence on it.
However, in a press briefing in Ikeja, Mosadoluwa, popularly called Ibile, accused the policemen of taking sides with a party in the land dispute, alleging that despite the court order, the policemen still invaded the land, thereby necessitating him to file another suit in court to stop the action. Court nullifies IPOB proscription, awards N8b damages (Leadership)
A High Court sitting in Enugu State and headed by Justice A. O. Onovo, has declared as unconstitutional the proscription and designation of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a terrorist organisation by the federal government and the South East governors.
The ruling followed a suit brought before the court by the IPOB legal team led by Aloy Ejimakor, challenging the 2017 proscription of IPOB as a terror organisation.
Justice Onovo, who delivered judgment in the suit marked E/20/2023, declared that “the practical application of the Terrorism Prevention Act and the executive or administrative action of the respondents (Southeast Governors Forum and the federal government) which directly led to the proscription of IPOB and its listing as a terrorist group”, was unconstitutional. The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) seeks to collaborate with the Federal Ministry of Interior to deepen existing inter-agency collaboration for fulfillment services in Nigeria.
The Postmaster General of the Federation, Tola Odeyemi, said this when she paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in Abuja.

South Africa begins inquiry into Johannesburg fire that killed 76 in August (VOA)
An inquiry began Thursday into an apartment building fire that killed 76 people in South Africa in August and laid bare the deep problems of poverty and neglect in parts of Africa’s richest city.
The nighttime blaze swept through a five-story building in the Marshalltown district of Johannesburg, trapping many of the hundreds of people who were living there in badly overcrowded conditions.
The building was believed to be one of what are known as “hijacked” buildings in Johannesburg. Authorities suspect it had been taken over by illegal landlords, who were renting out space to poor South Africans and foreign migrants looking desperately for somewhere to live. Read more

Israeli strike kills Al Jazeera reporter’s family in Gaza (MEMO)
The wife and two children of Al Jazeera reporter in the Gaza Strip, Wael Al-Dahdouh, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday, the Doha-based television said, Anadolu Agency reports.
The correspondent’s wife, son and daughter were killed in the strike that targeted a house in the southern Gaza Strip, the Qatari broadcaster said.
The family had already been displaced from their home to the Nuseirat Refugee Camp in southern Gaza amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes in the strip. Read more

Former Premier Li Keqiang, China’s top economic official for a decade, died Friday of a heart attack. He was 68.
Li was China’s No. 2 leader from 2013-23 and an advocate for private business but was left with little authority after President Xi Jinping made himself the most powerful Chinese leader in decades and tightened control over the economy and society.
CCTV said Li had been resting in Shanghai recently and had a heart attack on Thursday. He died at 12:10 am Friday. Read more

A man shot and killed at least 16 people at a restaurant and a bowling alley in Lewiston, Maine, and then fled into the night, sparking a massive search by hundreds of officers while frightened residents in multiple communities stayed locked in their homes Thursday under a shelter-in-place advisory.
A police bulletin identified Robert Card, 40, as a person of interest in the attack that sent panicked bowlers scrambling behind pins when shots rang out around 7 p.m. Wednesday. Card was described as a firearms instructor believed to be in the Army Reserve and assigned to a training facility in Saco, Maine.
The document, circulated to law enforcement officials, said Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the summer of 2023. It did not provide details about his treatment or condition but said Card had reported “hearing voices and threats to shoot up” the military base. A Wimbledon Championships featuring a new 8,000-seater stadium with retractable roof, and qualifying on site, has moved significantly closer.
Merton Council’s planning committee has granted permission for 39 new courts to be built over the road from the All England Club (AELTC) on the former site of Wimbledon Park Golf Club.
Councillors voted six to four in favour of the scheme in Thursday’s meeting.
But the AELTC still has some hurdles to jump amid strong local opposition. Read more
