Russia is closing in on the key Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, from where it would be able to launch attacks in multiple directions in the east.

The city, a logistical hub, is being defended by Ukraine but life there is bleak, with main supply lines being under threat nearly three years after Russia launched a land, air and sea invasion of its smaller neighbour.

The city has gone from a pre-war population of 60,000 to just 7,000 residents, according to the regional governor.

Armoured trucks will be delivering the post as the last post office recently shut.

“The situation is generally difficult, the enemy is constantly attacking on foot,” said the deputy commander of Ukraine’s 59th assault brigade, which is fighting on the Pokrovsk front.

He asked to be identified by his military call sign, Phoenix, for security reasons, Reuters reports. (Skynews)
