Sallah: Man, 35, bags 3 months imprisonment for stealing ram (Vanguard)

An Abeokuta Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday sentenced a 35-year-old man, Kabiru Lawal, to three months imprisonment for stealing goats and ram.

Lawal, who resides at Olomore area of Abeokuta, had pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of stealing and conversion.

The Magistrate, Mrs V.B. William, convicted Lawal, following his guilty plea to the charges preferred against him. Read more

Tinubu heads to Lagos for Eid-el-Kabir (Nation)

President Bola Tinubu will depart Abuja today, Friday, June 14, for Lagos where he will observe this year’s Eid-el-Kabir and spend the sallah holiday. 

A statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, also said President Tinubu will spend the season in prayers and reflecting on that task of advancing the nation.

Investing in Davido’s coin highly risky, SEC warns (Punch)

The Securities and Exchange Commission has warned the public against investing in the meme coin allegedly linked to the popular Nigerian singer, David Adedeji Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.

This was contained in a statement posted on the commission’s website on Friday.

SEC warned that anyone who patronises the meme coin, do so at their peril.

“The general public is hereby advised that meme coins lack fundamental value and are purely speculative. The general public is further warned that investing in meme coins, including $Davido, is highly risky and should be done with a full understanding of the associated risk. Read more

Rivers Assembly Crisis: Appeal Court orders Wike, Fubara factions to maintain status quo (DailyTrust)

A Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has ordered the parties involved in the ongoing House of Assembly crisis to maintain the status quo.

The Court of Appeal gave the order in a suit marked CA/PH/198/2024 instituted by Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule & 24 others (Appellants) against Rt Hon. Victor Oko-Jumbo and five others (Defendants).

Amaewhule and others had approached the apex court, seeking to vacate the Interlocutory Injunction of a High Court sitting in Port Harcourt which empowered Oko-Jumbo to keep on with the leadership of the state assembly. Read more 

Zamfara Kidnap: Army rescues 1 more corps member (Channels)

A combined effort of the security agencies, led by the Officers and men of 2 Battalion under I Division of Nigeria Army, Kaduna, has led to the rescue of one of the remaining two prospective corps members kidnapped in Zamfara in August last year.

With this, a total of seven out of the eight corps members have been rescued.

A statement by Director, Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, said efforts are still ongoing, to secure the safe release of the remaining male prospective corps member, who is still in custody of the kidnappers. Read more

Federal Government, yesterday, ordered Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to take over the protection of transmission lines and towers.

Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunjo-Ojo made this remark during the passing-out parade of  the 2nd batch of mining marshals of NSCDC in Abuja.

Expressing deep concern over the constant vandalism of transmission lines, towers and transformers,  Olubunmi Tunjo-Ojo described the oft-repeated vandalism of the critical national assets as economic sabotage which must be dealt with.

“We will take it sector by sector. We will protect the power sector. We will secure the energy sector. I challenge you to rise up and protect the critical national assets of Nigeria. The rate of vandalism and and economic sabotage going on in our transmission lines need to be looked into. I will give you the leadership. It is not acceptable to destroy power assets. Read more

FRSC deploys 743 vehicles for Eid-El-Kabir patrol (Leadership)

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed 743 patrol vehicles and other equipment for patrol during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration nationwide.

The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed stated this during a press conference in Abuja on Friday, noting that the deployment for the Eid-el-Kabir special patrol commences Friday, June 14, 2024.

Shehu also added that a total of 23 help areas have been mobilised to ensure prompt removal of obstructions, and rescue operations during the period. Read more

Court discharges Binance executives in FIRS tax evasion charge (DailyTrust)

A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, discharged the executive of Binance Holdings Limited, Tigran Gambaryan, and his fleeing colleague, Nadeem Anjarwalla, from the alleged tax evasion charge preferred against the company by Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

Justice Emeka Nwite, in a ruling, discharged and struck out Gambaryan and Anjarwalla’s names from the four-count charge after FIRS’ counsel, Moses Ideho, filed a fresh amended charge wherein Binance is listed as sole defendant.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that while Binance is the 1st defendant is the May 17 amended charge filed by FIRS, Gambaryan was listed as 2nd defendant while Anjarwalla’s name appeared as being at large. Read more

Kenya: Policeman shoots, injures magistrate in court (AfricaNews)

A police officer shot and injured magistrate Monica Kivuti at the Makadara Law Courts in Nairobi on Thursday, June 13 after she denied bail for his wife.

The officer was then killed in a shootout with other officers. Kivuti and three officers injured in the incident are stable and receiving treatment, according to local news report.

Chief Justice Martha Koome confirmed the shooter intended to kill the magistrate and ordered increased security at all courts. Read more
