Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday, as he personally intervened in the arrest of a Nigerian Army lance corporal caught driving against traffic on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The incident occurred while the governor was en route to commission a conference centre at Lagos State University.
Videos shared on social media captured the lance corporal in a confrontation with the governor, asserting his military status. However, Governor Sanwo-Olu, undeterred, ordered the soldier’s arrest, emphasising the need for law enforcement to be impartial.
This incident follows the recent ban on commercial motorcycles in six local government areas of Lagos, including Victoria Island.
In a separate incident along Ozumba Mbadiwe road in June of 2022, the governor personally directed the arrest of another military officer riding against traffic. The rider, resisting arrest, attempted to access a military facility, sparking a heated argument between security personnel and military officers claiming the individual as a colleague.
These developments underscore the governor’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring accountability, even among military personnel.
