Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Super Eagles coach and captain, Christian Chukwu, describing his passing as a monumental loss to Nigeria’s football community.

In a heartfelt statement released on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu eulogised Chukwu as a national icon whose contributions to Nigerian football remain unparalleled. The late football maestro, who captained the Green Eagles to victory in the 1980 African Nations Cup, passed away leaving behind a rich legacy both as a player and coach.

Sanwo-Olu extended his condolences to the Chukwu family, the Enugu State Government, and the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), urging them to take solace in the indelible mark he left on the sport. Known affectionately as “Chairman,” Chukwu was celebrated not only for his leadership on the field but also for his managerial roles with the Super Eagles, Kenya’s national team, and Enugu Rangers.

“The death of Christian Chukwu is a painful loss to Nigeria. He was a legend—one of the finest players and coaches in our football history,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “As captain, he made history by lifting the 1980 AFCON trophy, a moment that remains etched in our collective memory.”

Chukwu’s career spanned decades, serving as a player, coach and administrator. His influence extended beyond Nigeria, including a coaching stint with Kenya’s Harambee Stars.

The Governor prayed for divine comfort for his loved ones and football fans mourning the irreplaceable loss.
