The Apetu of Ipetumodu in Osun State, Oba Joseph Oloyede, and a Nigerian pastor, Edward Oluwasanmi, are facing possible prison sentences in the United States after pleading guilty to charges of COVID-19 relief fraud.
Oba Oloyede, a US-based accountant and information system expert, was appointed the new Apetu in July 2019.
The monarch and Oluwasanmi were arrested in early 2024 for their roles in a scheme to fraudulently obtain $4.2m in COVID-19 relief funds. Read more

Students of the University of Lagos (Unilag) were sensitised on Friday on the prevention and cure of malaria in celebration of the 2025 World Malaria Day.
The event was organised by Greenlife Pharmaceuticals Limited, in collaboration with Clinix Healthcare, Seagreen Pharmaceutical Ltd and Clearline HMO.
The event, themed โMalaria Ends With Us: Reinvested, Reimagined and Reinstigated,โ had doctors give lectures to the students on the dangers of malaria and the progress made so far in combating it in Africa. Read more
Driver severely injured as truck falls off bridge in Lagos (Channels)
A yet-to-be-identified driver of an articulated truck sustained fractures in both arms after the truck he was driving plunged from the Pen Cinema Bridge located in the Agege area of Lagos State and fell on two commercial buses on Saturday.
The spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday.
According to Taofiq, the driver of the truck lost control while attempting to navigate his way on the bridge, leading to the truck falling off the bridge. Read more

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin has declared that Oba River is the boundary between Ibadan in Oyo State and Iwo town in Osun State.
The monarch made the declaration at an emergency meeting of Obas, Mogajis and Baales on the boundary areas of Ibadan and Iwo which at the Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan.
Speaking on those he described as land expansionists, the Olubadan ordered them as well as land grabbers and other trespassers to leave forcefully acquired Ibadan land without further delay in their own interests. Read more

The Department of State Services (DSS) has recovered 50 AK-47 rifles, six pump-action shotguns, and more than 3,000 rounds of ammunition during a covert operation in Asaba, Delta State.
The agency also arrested an Itsekiri serving in the British Army (name withheld) who allegedly procured the weapons at the behest of one Collins.
Multiple sources in the DSS confirmed on Friday night that the operatives from the DSS Delta Command apprehended the prime suspect, a Major in the British Army, and several associates in connection with the illegal arms supply. Read more

Former The Voice Kids star Karen Silva has died at 17 after experiencing a hemorrhagic stroke.
Silva made a name for herself after advancing to the semi-finals round of the music competition show in 2020 at 12 years old. Her death was confirmed in a post shared on her official Instagram page Thursday, April 24.

The mother of a family of four undocumented immigrants who were arrested by US Border agents while fleeing to Canada has told Newsweek they spent more than two weeks in a locked windowless cell.
“My four-year-old would wake up crying. She dreamed of running free in the park and going to McDonald’s,” Aracely told Newsweek.
