German Chancellor accused Moscow of increasingly attacking civilian targets following the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine, saying it showed a “new dimension” in Russia’s war tactics.
“This is also something that is part of many, many of the crimes that we have seen in Ukraine that were committed by Russian soldiers,” the chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Tuesday at the WDR’s Europaforum in Berlin.
His comments came in response to a question about possible consequences of the explosion.
Russian forces would also attack towns, villages, hospitals, schools and infrastructure, he said.
“Therefore, this is something that has a new dimension, but fits the way Putin is waging this war.”
The explosion in Russian-occupied Kherson also destroyed an adjacent hydroelectric power plant and provoked widespread fears of flooding. (dpa/NAN)
