Senate engages protesting workers after pulling down National Assembly gate (Leadership)
The Senate, on Wednesday, set up a committee to dialogue with protesting workers’ unions after forcing their way into the National Assembly Complex on Wednesday to protest fuel subsidy removal by the federal government.
The protesters in their hundreds had marched from the Unity Fountain in Abuja to the National Assembly Complex in protest against the “anti-poor” policies of the President Bola Tinubu administration.
Upon their arrival at the parliament complex, the protesters pulled down the first gate and marched on the premises. Read more
LagosNMA declares indefinite strike over colleague’s death (Punch)
The Nigerian Medical Association, Lagos State chapter, has directed all the doctors working in the three government hospitals on Lagos Island to begin an indefinite strike over the death of its colleague, Dr Vwaere Diaso.
The NMA also declared a five-day mourning period in the state and asked doctors in the other government-owned hospitals to scale down activities as a mark of respect for the dead colleague.
The hospitals to embark on the indefinite strike are the General Hospital, Odan, Lagos; Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, Lagos, and the Massey Street Children’s Hospital, Lagos. Read more
Police arrest 3 suspects, recover firearms, hard drugs in Lagos (Guardian)
The Police have arrested three suspects after its officers stormed the slums in the White Sand area of Orile Iganmu in Lagos.
Lagos Police command spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin in a Tweet on Wednesday said the arrest was carried out after actionable intelligence was gathered.
Among the items recovered from the suspects are three locally fabricated firearms, thirteen live cartridges and hard drugs. Read more

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday evening visited the site of the helicopter crash in the State.
Sanwo-Olu, who stopped at the site on his way from the airport after joining President Bola Tinubu on a trip to Benin Republic said necessary investigations will reveal the cause of the crash.

There was mild drama on the floor of the Senate, as the Senate Minority Leader Simon Mwadkwom took on Dele Alake, one of the ministerial nominees of President Bola Tinubu at the ongoing ministerial screening.
Mwadkwom, representing Plateau North Senatorial District, during the resumed proceedings of the screening, on Wednesday, alleged that Alake had referred to some members of an opposition party as “wild dogs.”
The senator then asked Alake to confirm if he truly made the statement, asking if he (Alake) was inspired to make the utterance and if he actually said it. Read more
LAWMA Academy organises summer school for pupils (ThisDay)
LAWMA Academy, the educational arm of Lagos Waste Management Authority, has organised a four-week summer school, for children aged 8 to 12, with the aim of teaching the younger generation the fundamentals of effective waste management. The four-week programme began on 31st July 31, 2023, at the Authority’s headquarters, Ijora-Olopa.
Commenting on the program, the managing director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, noted that the summer school was organised to educate the younger generation, on the need to imbibe the culture of proper waste management, to teach arts and crafts, upcycling, as well as expose them to indoor and outdoor sports, field trips, among other activities. NAF air strikes kill 16 terrorists in Zamfara, Katsina (Nation)
Air bombardments by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have killed 16 terrorists loyal to criminal kingpin, Dankarami, in Zurmi, Tsafe and Faskari local government areas of Zamfara State, and Jibia local government area Katsina State.
A military source told The Nation that the air strikes were conducted between 28 to 29 July 2023, following credible intelligence of Dankarami’s whereabouts, whom he said was known for collaborating with other kingpins in the area to carry out violent attacks on some communities in Zurmi local government.
The source further said that several terrorists on eight motorcycles and herds of cattle were spotted heading towards a hidden camp in the bushes which was subsequently struck by NAF aircraft. Read more

The man driving the vehicle that collided with Treat Williams’ motorcycle resulting in the actor’s death June 12 has been charged with grossly negligent operation with death.
According to a press release from the Vermont State Police, upon the Bennington County State’s Attorney’s office completing its review of the accident, the prosecutors requested Tuesday that the Vermont State Police issue a citation on the charge to Ryan Koss, 35. The release identified Koss as the man who was driving the Honda Element SUV that turned into the path of Williams’ motorcycle. Read more
