Sesor Empowerment Foundation, in collaboration with Grooming Centre, Global Rights, the Foundation for Justice, Development and Peace (FJDP) successfully executed two significant support initiatives for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Lagos and Benue States in July.
On Wednesday 17 July, 2024, Sesor and FJDP delivered relief materials to displaced persons in Jato-Аka, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State. The team distributed 150 packs of essential food materials, including rice, palm oil, and salt, impacting approximately 1,050 individuals based on an average family size of seven.
The Sesor/FJDP were warmly received by the displaced persons at the Jato-Aka Community Centre. Tracy Shima, Sesor Benue Programme Coordinator, greeted those gathered explaining that they had made the 5-hour drive from Makurdi to Jato-Aka to not only deliver food items but to also remind the people that they were not forgotten, encouraging those gathered to not give up hope. Speaking on behalf of the community, the head of Yaav district and Chief Simon Abeebe, thanked the Sesor & FJDP team for their visit, saying that though life was difficult for IDPs, they had not lost faith that one day, they would go back home.
In a separate initiative in Lagos, Sesor also provided livelihood support funds to 40 women with each beneficiary receiving funds ranging from ₦40,000 to ₦130,000 to bolster their micro-businesses. Speaking at Sesor’s Lagos office, Merit Emmanuel, Sesor’s Head of Programmes said, “We are now supporting over 130 women with funding, thanks to Grooming Centre. This particular July initiative has been bolstered with additional support from OSIWA through Global Rights as we have been able to provide additional funds to women we had initially funded last year. Our Livelihood Support Programme is aimed at promoting economic empowerment and self-reliance among the displaced.”
