Nigerian singer, Peter Okoye of P-Square has apologised to the Nigeria Police on behalf of his colleague in the music industry, Seun Kuti, who had a conflict with a police officer on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos.
Okoye also appealed to the police to temper justice with mercy over Kuti’s action, whose video has gone viral.
A video of Kuti assaulting a police officer hit social media on Saturday, and many Nigerians have condemned the action. Consequently, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba has ordered the arrest of the music star. Read more

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba has ordered the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command to arrest Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who was captured on video assaulting a police officer in uniform.
This was contained in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Saturday by the Force Public Relations Officer FPRO CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi’.
The statement further added that the IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly. Read more
Gunmen kill Police, driver at checkpoint in Rivers (Guardian)
A yet-to-be-identified police officer deployed to Emohua Local Council of Rivers State has been reportedly shot dead at a checkpoint around the Emohua axis of the East-West road by suspected criminals.
A member of a local vigilante group, Ohaka Obisike, who confirmed the killing said, a man was also hit by stray bullet while driving in his car.
Obisike, who complained about the decision of the Nigeria Police Force to stop local vigilantes from carrying firearms, said the order has demoralised them from carrying out action against criminals terrorising the area. Read more

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has showed his support for chef Hilda Baci as she attempts to break the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking time.
In an attempt to clinch this record, the 27-year-old graduate on Thursday set up a four-day ‘cook-a-thon’ at Amore Gardens, Lekki, Lagos State.
Sanwo-Olu showed up at the venue to meet with Baci. He made this known on his Twitter page on Sunday. Read more
2 businessmen excrete 193 cocaine pellets in NDLEA custody (Channels)
Two businessmen arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NAIA, Abuja for cocaine ingestion have both excreted 193 pellets of the illicit drug after three days in observatory custody.
According to a statement by NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, the traffickers: Onoh Ebere, 49, and Christian Ifeanyi Ogbuji, 47, were intercepted at the Abuja airport on Wednesday 10th May upon their arrival from Uganda via Addis Ababa, onboard Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 951.
Though both suspects have businesses they manage in Nigeria, their main source of income has been drug trafficking. Read more

The police in Ogun State have arrested a corps member, Adebola Sodiq for allegedly raping a 20-year-old lady (name withheld).
The suspect was arrested on Friday in Owode Egba in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of the state.
Our correspondent gathered that, the suspect lured the victim into room under the pretence of buying gift for her and allegedly raped.

One of Sudan’s biggest singers killed in crossfire (BBC)
One of Sudan’s most prominent singers, Shaden Gardood, has been killed in crossfire in the Sudanese city of Omdurman.
Gardood died amid clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Friday.
The 37-year-old’s death came only one day after the warring parties signed a deal to alleviate civilian suffering. Fighting erupted in Sudan in April over a vicious power struggle within the country’s military leadership. Read more

Taylor Swift had to break from a hit song during her latest concert in a bid to help a fan who she thought was being harshly treated by a security guard.
The songstress, 33, was filmed singing chart-topper Bad Blood while on stage in Philadelphia. But as she belted out the vocals she was clearly disturbed by the actions of a “security guard” who was trying to deal with an apparent crowd issue.
The footage shared online showed TayTay yell “stop” as the backing track continued. She was able to get back into the groove of the song but her attention was clearly still on the situation as she appeared to shout: “She wasn’t doing anything.” Read more

The sixth edition of the Quirino Awards, an annual event dedicated to the promotion of animation in Spain, Portugal and Latin America, saw a triumph for Portuguese cinema, with animations from the country taking home four of the nine awards.

Swedish singer Loreen was named the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest for her pop ballad “Tattoo,” beating out 25 other nations at the event’s final on Saturday night.
It’s her second time winning over the hearts of the jury and public, having first won for Sweden in 2012.
The eclectic, extravagant event honored war-torn Ukraine’s spirit of resiliency as it stuck to the 2023 contest’s theme, “united by music,” held at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, England. Family of 4 elephants electrocuted in field (Metro)
A family of four elephants have died after being electrocuted in a field.
The tragedy unfolded in Andhra Pradesh, south India, when the animals touched a high voltage transformer on Friday.
The bodies of two females, one male and a calf were found lying by the 11,000-watt transformer, suggesting they died instantly. Forest conservation officer Srikanthanatha Reddy confirmed their cause of deaths was electric shock. Read more
Russia reveals 2 military commanders killed on Ukraine front line (National)
Russia on Sunday said two of its military commanders had been killed in combat near the front line in Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine.
In a rare announcement of its losses on the battlefield, the Russian Defence Ministry said the commander of the 4th Motorised Rifle Brigade, Vyacheslav Makarov, and deputy commander of the Army Corps, Yevgeny Brovko, died in fighting in eastern Ukraine.
The news came as the battle for control of Bakhmut in the eastern region of Donetsk continued.
Col Makarov was killed as his brigade repelled attacks by Ukrainian troops south of the settlement of Krasne, a ministry statement said.

The immediate past president of the Nigeria Referees Association, Tade Azeez, has vowed to make the Lagos State Football Association bigger and better when he becomes the Chairman of the FA after the Association’s elections on May 24th.
Azeez, who served as the Lagos FA Vice Chairman to the former Chairman, Seyi Akinwunmi, for eight years, noted that he has mapped out his plans to lead a progressive tenure at the helm of affairs at the Lagos FA.

David Coulthard believes that the increase in support in the motorsport feeder series will soon result in a female racing driver reaching Formula 1.
The last female racing driver to officially compete in a Formula 1 race weekend was Giovanna Amati, who attempted to qualify for the 1992 Brazilian Grand Prix.
