President Buhari, who is off to London today, has formally declared his intention to run for a second term in 2019.
The president who contested four times before emerging Nigeria’s only two time head of state (first as military, now as civilian) along side Olusegun Obasanjo will now equal Obasanjo’s record. Obasanjo served two terms before failing in a rumoured 3rd term attempt.
The President is said to have made the declaration at an APC NEC meeting in Abuja. The declaration was publicly announced by presidential confidant, Mallam Nasir El Rufai who is Governor of Kaduna state and one who has been rumoured to be considering a presidential run himself. It was also confirmed by presidential aide Bashir Ahmad, both via twitter.
The decThe president’s formal declaration will have an effect on the political calibration. His most visible opponent is former Vice President Atiku Abubakar who formally declared his intention two weeks ago during a visit to Port Harcourt.
Others include Jaye Gaskia, Fela Durotoye, Kingsley Moghalu and Omoyele Sowore.
