In a shocking and disturbing incident, a 16-year-old boy, Abubakar, was buried alive by his two siblings over a missing phone, in Zaria, Kaduna State.
The brothers, aged 22 and 18, were arrested by the police after a good Samaritan discovered Abubakar’s head protruding from a hole in an abandoned property.

‘It’s a skit,’ says husband whose ‘passport was torn’ at airport (Vanguard)
The man featured in a viral video, in which his wife reportedly tore up his passport upon their return to Nigeria, has clarified that the entire incident was staged as a skit.
In a recent video shared on the family’s Instagram page, the man could be seen in the company of his children begging Nigerians to forgive him and understand.
According to him, what his wife tore was not a passport, adding that as a Nigerian, he cannot go against the laws of the country. Read more
Customs releases guidelines on food import waiver (Leadership)
The Nigeria Customs Service (NSC), on Wednesday, released import guidelines for the implementation of a Zero Percent Duty Rate and Value Added Tax (VAT), exemption on selected basic food items.
A statement by the service’s Public Relations Officer, Abdulahi Maiwada, noted that the guidelines were released by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun.
According to statement, the policy is effective from 15th July 2024 and will remain in force until December 31, 2024. Read more

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday asked the National Assembly to create special courts for the prosecution of crude oil thieves and sundry crimes in the petroleum industry.
The Chief of Staff to the EFCC Chairman, Michael Uzokwe, who made the request at the ongoing investigative hearing of the House of Representatives special committee probing ‘crude oil theft and other losses’ said there was the need to create the special courts in order to accelerate prosecution of suspects.
He lamented that the delay in attending to cases in court was affecting the speedy dispensation of justice, adding that with special courts, the commission will be able to fast track the prosecution of oil thieves. Read more
Kano CoS denies diverting palliatives, says allegation politically motivated (Nation)
Kano Chief of Staff (CoS) Shehu Sagagi has denied allegation he diverted palliatives, describing it as “baseless, misleading, and politically motivated.”
Kano APC chairman, Abdullahi Abbas, who made the allegation also called for “investigation and prosecution of the culprit,” even threatening legal action.
But Sagagi, in a statement on Wednesday, said the accusation by the APC chairman was an antic deployed by the opposition party in a “desperate attempt to tarnish his image in the eyes of right thinking Nigerians. Read more

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of 4 Permanent Secretaries for the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

UNICEF says 56.9 per cent of under-five-year children in Kano are affected by stunting due to malnutrition.
Mr Oluniyi Oyedokun, UNICEF Nutrition Specialist, Kano office, stated this on Wednesday in Kaduna at a two-day stakeholders inception meeting on scaled-up Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) for improved pregnancy outcomes in Kano.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said an incursion into the Russian region of Kursk has been achieving its strategic goals, with Russia swiftly pushing back on the claims.

WHO declares mpox a global public health emergency for second time in 2 years (NBC)
The World Health Organization on Wednesday declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, following an outbreak of the viral infection in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has spread to neighboring countries in Africa.
A “public health emergency of international concern,” or PHEIC, is the WHO’s highest level of alert, and it can accelerate research, funding and international public health measures and co-operation to contain the disease.
Earlier this week, Africa’s top public health body similarly declared mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, an emergency after warning that the viral infection was spreading at an alarming rate. Read more

Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy underwent surgery for a full repair of his meniscus Wednesday and will miss the 2024 season, coach Kevin O’Connell said.
Dr. Chris Larson performed the operation at Twin Cities Orthopedics in Eagan, Minn.
O’Connell announced Tuesday that McCarthy would undergo a procedure on his right meniscus that would determine the severity of the injury. Read more
