Taylor Swift sweeps, Shakira sizzles and hip-hop icons close night of epic performances
Taylor Swift was the biggest winner at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) on Tuesday night, taking home nine awards including Video of the Year and Artist of the Year.
She won the best video award for her Midnights single “Anti-Hero”, which reached No 1 in the UK singles chart after its release last October. The only category Swift was nominated for that she didn’t win was Best Editing, which was claimed by Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire”.
Ice Spice was chosen as Best New Artist, while Nicki Minaj took the prize for Best Hip-Hop and SZA won in the Best R&B category.
Minaj hosted the show for the second consecutive year. After winning her award she told the crowd: “So often I joke around and play around and stuff, but tonight, I don’t know why, this morning I just woke up and I had this really strong sense of gratitude.”
The four-hour ceremony featured performances from the likes of Lil Wayne, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and LL Cool J as the show celebrated 50 years of hip-hop.
