Teenager crushes Lagos trader with mother’s car (Punch)
An attempt by a 16-year-old boy to test his driving skills with his mother’s car at the Arena Shopping Mall, Oshodi, Lagos State, has cost a life.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim, Mrs Tuale Iwejim, was walking to where she was to buy goods for her shop when she was crushed by the Sports Utility Vehicle.
While the teenager struggled with the car, he was said to have put it in reverse and hit the 50-year-old a second time.
The woman was rushed to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi Araba, Surulere, where she had surgery before her death on Thursday, September 4, 2020.
The deceased’s husband, Christopher Iwejim, told our correspondent that his wife suffered life-threatening injuries from the accident. Read more
Why Lagos adopted phased school reopening, by commissioner (Guardian)
The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, has offered insight into what prompted the phased resumption of schools by the Lagos State government.
According to her, the measure is to enable public schools fulfil the extant COVID-19 safety guidelines.She said Junior Secondary School (JSS) 3 and Senior Secondary (SSS) 2 students in public schools are to resume from Monday, September 21, 2020.
In a statement yesterday, the commissioner noted: “The resumption will permit the present JSS 3 students who are already in an exit class to revise and get adequately prepared for their forthcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) organised by the Lagos State Examination Board, and scheduled for between Tuesday, 6th and Monday, 12th of October, 2020. Confusion trails drowning of two in Lagos flood (Punch)
Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, on Sunday, continued the search for two residents said to have been swept away by flood at Oyebanjo Solarin Street, in the Ketu area of the state.
PUNCH Metro, however, gathered that neither the agency nor residents of the area could ascertain the identities of the victims.
While some residents told our correspondent that the victims were a father and his child, others said they were young ladies.
LASEMA claimed in a statement that the two missing persons were children, adding that the agency received distress calls about the incident around 8pm on Saturday. Read more
NRC raises fares as Lagos-Ogun train service resumes (Guardian)
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced that the Lagos-Ogun Mass Transit train will resume today, September 14, 2020, after five months of suspension.
This was contained in a statement by the Lagos District Public Relations Officer of the NRC, Dr. Khadijah Aroyewun–Adekomaiya. The statement quoted the District Manager of NRC in Lagos, Mr. Jerry Oche, as declaring that COVID-19 protocols would be adhered to. Oche said: “NRC is set to resume its Mass Transit Train Services (MTTS) on Monday, September 14, 2020.

LASG suspends development of estates without layout approval (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has said it is placing suspension on further development of housing estates without the requisite layout approval in the area designated as Sapata Village Excision, near the Victoria Garden City, Lekki.
While receiving situation report of the area in his office in Alausa, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Idris Salako, said this was to pave the way for orderly and sustainable development of the area.
The Assistant Director, Public Affairs, Mukaila Sanusi, disclosed this in a statement on Friday titled “Regional road: LASG suspends development of estates without layout approval in Sapata-Lekki.” Read more
Two siblings allegedly rape seven-year-old girl in Anambra (Vanguard)
Chidimma Ezeokoli (aged 23) and his 11-year-old teenage brother (name withheld) have been accused of repeatedly having unlawful carnal knowledge of a seven-year-old girl in Oko, in the Aguata Council of Anambra.
The mother of the victim, Miss Chinenyenwa Ozulumba, (27), who narrated her story on Sunday in Awka, said the boys were two biological children of her landlady, Mrs Nnabuife Okoli.
Ozulumba, a single mother, said her daughter lost her virginity forcefully to her hosts because she trusted them and entrusted her to their care whenever she went to work in a nearby bar. Read more

The Nigerian Government Sunday said former President Olusegun Obasanjo is a “lowly…Divider-in-Chief” after he criticised President Muhammadu Buhari of running the country aground.
“From the lofty heights of Commander-in-Chief, General Obasanjo has descended to the lowly level of Divider-in-Chief,” Buhari’s spokesman Garba Shehu said in a statement.

N490.4bn inflow to lift interbank liquidity (Vanguard)
The interbank money market will enjoy liquidity boost of N490.4 billion from matured treasury bills (T-bills) this week, even as the naira weakened last week depreciated despite foreign exchange (FX) sales resumption.

ARM: UK-based chip designer sold to Nvidia (BBC)
UK-based computer chip designer ARM Holdings is being sold to the American graphics chip specialist Nvidia.
The cash-and-stock deal values ARM as being worth as much as $40bn (£31.2bn). It has been struck by current owner, Japanese conglomerate Softbank, four years after it acquired ARM for $32bn.
ARM’s tech is at the heart of most smartphones, among many other devices.
Nvidia has promised to keep the business based in the UK, to hire more staff, and to retain ARM’s brand.
It added that the deal would create “the premier computing company for the age of artificial intelligence” (AI). Read more
Tanzania: Presidential election campaign under way in Zanzibar (Aljazeera)
Campaigning is under way in Tanzania’s semi-autonomous state of Zanzibar for what is expected to be a fiercely contested presidential election next month.
The result could trigger another potentially violent fallout between the governing party and the opposition following the disputed election five years ago.

Russian car market becomes second largest in Europe (RT)
Despite car sales falling in August, the Russian car market became one of the largest in Europe, climbing to the second spot only behind Germany, according to the analytical agency Avtostat.
According to Avtostat data, Russian car lovers bought around 130,000 new cars (excluding commercial vehicles or LCV) last month. August auto sales shed around 0.5 percent compared to the same period last year. The decline comes after auto sales in Russia finally showed signs of recovery, growing around 7 percent in July. However, the drop did not stop the country from moving up three positions in the list of Europe’s largest car markets. Read more
Jo Malone ‘deeply apologises’ to John Boyega after axing him from advert in China (Metro)
John Boyega has received an apology from perfume brand Jo Malone after they cut him from an advert he helped create.
The Star Wars actor appeared in the London Gent campaign in August after being named the brand’s first male global ambassador last year. In the ad, John is seen walking around his hometown of Peckham, London and partying with family and friends while also wearing traditional Nigerian clothing.
However, the actor was completely edited out of the advert for the Chinese market and instead replaced by actor Liu Haoran. Read more
Climate change: Warmth shatters section of Greenland ice shelf (BBC)
A big chunk of ice has just broken away from the Arctic’s largest remaining ice shelf – 79N, or Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden – in north-east Greenland.
The ejected section covers about 110 square km; satellite imagery shows it to have shattered into many small pieces.
The loss is further evidence say scientists of the rapid climate changes taking place in Greenland. Read more

Avengers superfans have noticed a Captain America error in Avengers: Endgame’s final battle sequence, because that’s what superfans are supposed to do.
The error in question was posted on Reddit over the weekend. ‘In Avengers Endgame (2019), during the portal scene, after Captain America’s shield has been cut in 2, the shield is whole,’ said the fan.

Microsoft says it won’t be acquiring TikTok’s US operations after Chinese parent rejects bid (RT)
Software giant Microsoft’s acquisition bid for the US operations of TikTok has been rejected by the social media platform’s Chinese parent, leaving prospects for the unit up in the air one week before the deadline to make a deal.
China’s ByteDance informed the suitor on Sunday that it won’t be selling the business to Microsoft. The impasse may give the upper hand to Oracle, another US technology firm that has reportedly been in talks with Beijing-based ByteDance. Shortly after the news broke, Reuters and The Wall Street Journal reported ByteDance had picked Oracle as the winning bidder, citing sources. Read more

Mikel Arteta believes Mohamed Elneny’s lack of self-belief hindered his chances of making an impact at Arsenal.
The Egypt international was signed during Arsene Wenger’s reign in January 2016 but after an encouraging start his appearances dwindled. In Unai Emery’s first season at the club, Elneny started just five Premier League games before the Spaniard allowed the midfielder to join Besiktas on loan last year.

Conor McGregor ‘exhibited his private parts’ to woman before Calvi arrest – reports (RT)
Former UFC champion Conor McGregor was arrested for “exhibiting his private parts” to a woman as she entered a bar toilet on the port town of Calvi in Corsica, according to reports from French media.
France 3 Corse reported that an associate of the women spoke to the broadcaster following the incident which resulted in McGregor’s arrest on Friday. He was released without charge on Saturday.
McGregor is now awaiting results from “key physical tests” and an examination of CCTV footage before learning if he will face further legal issues stemming from the alleged incident. Read more
