Arsene Wenger’s personal touch was the key reason behind Alexis Sanchez’s decision to sign for Arsenal and snub Liverpool in the summer of 2014, according to the north London club’s former transfer negotiator Dick Law.
Sanchez starred during Chile’s World Cup 2014 campaign which ended in unfortunate circumstances following a penalty shootout defeat against hosts Brazil in the second round.
Despite enhancing his reputation, Sanchez was deemed surplus to requirements at Camp Nou with Barcelona intent on signing Luis Saurez to form part of a deadly attacking trio alongside Lionel Messi and Neymar.
Liverpool were prepared to offer Sanchez a lucrative deal in order to tempt him into a move to Anfield, but it was the input of Wenger, who was working as a television pundit during the tournament, that ultimately swayed the winger’s decision. Read more
