President Bola Tinubu has lauded Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her unanimous reappointment as Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), describing it as a testament to her earned global trust and leadership.
Okonjo-Iweala, a celebrated development economist and former Nigerian Finance Minister, made history in 2021 as the first African and woman to lead the WTO. Her second four-year term will commence on September 1, 2025, following the expiration of her initial tenure on August 31, 2025.
According to a statement by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu expressed delight over the international community’s confidence in Okonjo-Iweala’s capacity to champion sustainable global trade. He noted that her continued stewardship would reinforce the WTO’s role as a vital force for inclusive economic growth and governance.
The Nigerian leader emphasised his administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting the WTO’s mission of fostering a fair and equitable multilateral trading system. As a key member of the WTO, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Nigeria remains devoted to promoting inclusive trade and development.
Tinubu also highlighted Okonjo-Iweala’s bold reforms and her relentless efforts in advancing equitable trade practices and international cooperation. He assured her of Nigeria’s steadfast support as she embarks on her second term, a move he believes will further strengthen global economic governance.
