President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep condolences to the government and people of India over the death of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

Singh, who served as Indiaโ€™s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92.

In a statement released by the State House on Friday and signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Singh as a visionary leader whose contributions to Nigeria-India relations remain significant.

He recalled Singhโ€™s historic 2007 visit to Nigeria, during which the late Prime Minister became one of the few global leaders to address a joint session of the Nigerian National Assembly.

The statement partly read, โ€œPresident Tinubu pays tribute to Dr Singhโ€™s dedication to strengthening the Nigeria-India relationship, noting that his diplomatic efforts remain a reference point in the history of the bilateral relations between the two nations.

โ€œThe President recounts the establishment of the Strategic Partnership between Nigeria and India under Singhโ€™s tenure, which has continued to flourish, driving political and economic prosperity for both countries.

โ€œPresident Tinubu further lauds Prime Minister Singhโ€™s efforts to forge improved cooperation in defence trade, culture, education, health, science and technology, and ICT.โ€
He expressed gratitude to the Indian people for celebrating Singhโ€™s legacy and prayed that his life of service continues to inspire future generations. (Punch)
