The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said that electricity distribution companies (Discos) would have to invest about $4 billion over the next three years to be able to match its ongoing expansion of the national grid to take up to 20,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity generated in the country, and also distribute same by 2021.
The TCN equally stated that it was appointed by the federal government to part-manage the N72 billion the government plans to invest in the upgrade of the distribution networks not just because of the need to get excess generated electricity to the distribution networks but also to protect its transmission facilities which it claimed were frequently burnt by alleged inefficiencies of the Discos.
Speaking on Tuesday in an interview THISDAY monitored during a programme on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Abuja, the Managing Director of the TCN, Mr. Usman Mohammed, explained that the $4 billion projected investment figure was gotten from a study the TCN did on its grid expansion programme and which included an assessment of the Discos’ capacities and expansion needs.
