Just when it seemed like the drama surrounding Nicki Minaj’s new album Queen had finally subsided, the rapper faces a copyright infringement lawsuit from Tracy Chapman regarding a song that samples the iconic folk-rock singer.
The song in question: “Sorry,” which features Nas and samples Chapman’s “Baby Can I Hold You.” The track was initially supposed to appear on Queen. In August, Minaj (born Onika Maraj) revealed in a series of since-deleted tweets that she initially had no idea her song sampled Chapman. She tweeted a direct plea to Chapman and asked her fans whether she should keep her Aug. 10 release date for Queen or push it back a week in the hopes of clearing the sample. Read more
