High court to try Dane for wife’s, daughter’s death (Nation)

The trial of Danish national, Peter Nielsen, for the alleged murder of his Nigerian wife, Zainab, and three-year-old daughter, Petra, will be transferred from the magistrates’ court to a high court, the Lagos State Government said yesterday.

Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Adeniji Kazeem said the case would be moved based on legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Nielsen was accused of killing his wife and daughter in their Banana Island, Ikoyi, home on April 5.

He was charged before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court on April 11. The court ordered that he be remanded in prison, pending the DPP’s advice. Read more

Motor boy allegedly burgles house, steals N1.3m property (Punch)

A 20-year-old motor boy, Jamiu Rafiu, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court in Lagos for allegedly burgling a house and stealing property worth N1.3m. Rafiu, whose residential address was not provided, is being tried for conspiracy, burglary and stealing.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, the accused committed the offences, with others still at large, on March 23 at No. 11, Cappa Avenue, Palmgrove Estate, Ilupeju, Lagos. Read more

Lagos seals three baby factories, rescues 162 abandoned babies (Vanguard)

Lagos State Government has sealed no fewer than three baby factories and rescued 162 abandoned babies, sexually abused children among others.

The State Government also removed from the streets 1,680 children, beggars/destitute/mentally challenged persons, to ensure sanity returns to roads in the state.

Commissioner for Youths and Social Development, Mr. Agboola Dabiri, gave the statistics, Wednesday, during ministerial press briefing in Ikeja. He lamented that parents attitude towards their children were not improving. Read more

Lagos couple found dead in apartment (Punch)

There was confusion on Sadius Crescent, Araromi-Ile, in the Morogbo area of Lagos State, after the decomposing bodies of a couple were found in their apartment. The remains, which were found on Saturday, were removed by policemen from the Morogbo Police Division.

This is just as an electrician, Abiodun Odutu, got electrocuted while reconnecting electricity to his house on Yusuf Asika Street, Ijegun, Isheri-Oshun. Punch Metro learnt that the identities of the deceased couple had yet-to-be established as their co-tenants were said to have fled the neighbourhood upon the discovery. Read more

Suspects to Lagos CP: We’re not Pipeline Vandals (Independent)

Virtually all the suspects arrested by the operatives of the Isheri-Osun Police Division of the Lagos State Police Command, on the allegation of bursting the government’s oil pipeline and stealing petroleum products have denied the allegation.

They accused the Police operatives of overzealousness and adopting a cunning method of trying to please Edgal Imohimi, Commissioner of Police, Lagos Command that they are hard working.

The suspects who were paraded recently with other suspected criminals by CP Imohimi, urged the police boss to revisit their cases as they were erroneously arrested. Read more

Home help allegedly attempts to murder employer’s brother (Punch)

A home help, Swantan Weltei, 25, was on Tuesday brought before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly attempting to murder his employer’s brother, Michael Ugbana, and stealing N200,000.

The accused is standing trial on charges bordering on conspiracy, stealing and attempted murder.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against him. The Prosecutor, Inspector Oladele Adebayo, had told the court that the offences were committed on March 29, at about 10am, at Isheri, a suburb of Lagos State. Read more

Police arrest Lagos security man for impregnating daughter (Punch)

A security guard in Obadore, in the Igando/Ikotun Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, Taiwo Oyelabi, has been arrested by the police after allegedly raping his daughter for seven months.

The 50-year-old reportedly impregnated the 21-year-old daughter while the incest lasted. Punch Metro learnt that Oyelabi and the victim’s mother divorced when she was two-year-old.

Before the separation, they had had a set of twins together which included the victim. It was learnt that Oyelabi’s younger sister took custody of the twins and she later travelled to Cote D’Ivoire with them. Read more

Judge’s absence stalls Evans trial (Punch)

The scheduled trial of alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike alias Evans, at an Ikeja High Court, was on Monday stalled following the absence of the judge, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that a court official, who pleaded anonymity, Justice Taiwo was on an official assignment with Justice Opeyemi Oke, the Chief Judge of Lagos State.

The case was, however, adjourned until June 16 for a continuation of trial. Evans is facing trial alongside Victor Aduba on a four-count bordering on kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms. They are accused of kidnapping Mr. Sylvanus Ahamonu, holding him hostage for at least nine weeks and collecting a ransom of 420,000 dollars from his family. Read more

Woman allegedly steals neighbour’s two-month-old baby in Lagos (Punch)

A 39-year-old trader, Fausat Hammed, who allegedly stole her neighbour’s two-month-old baby, was on Monday brought before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court. Hammed is facing trial on a charge of stealing a child.

She, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Prosecutor, Inspector Chinalu Uwadione, told the court that the offence was committed on April 16, at No. 49, Giwa Street, Ijora, Badiya.

He said that the accused who was pretending to rock Rafatu Hammed, quietly sneaked out with the baby. The offence, according to Uwadione, violates Section 277 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Read more

Boat operator deflowers Lagos pupil who rejected love proposal • I am ready to marry her – Suspect (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old boat operator, Ayo Festus, for allegedly raping a Senior Secondary School one pupil, Lola, in the Igbogbo, Ikorodu area of the state.

Punch  Metro learnt that the suspect deflowered the victim while she was working for her guardian at a shop on Solawon Street.

Festus, who had an apartment in the house where the shop was, allegedly took the victim into his room and raped her. Read more
