Truck crushes 5-year-old girl (Punch)
The Police Command in Lagos State says a five-year-old girl, simply identified as Bosede, was crushed to death by a truck while crossing the Iganmu-Apapa Expressway with her mother.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident to the newsmen on Sunday.

The Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) and the Renevlyn Development Initiative (RDI) have described the hasty payment of compensation and other benefits to the illegally disengaged staff of Lagos Water Corporation (LWC) by the Lagos State government as a peremptory move to stall the reversal of the unpopular decision and clamor for investigation of the finances of the corporation since 1999.
A statement by the LWC on Sunday, May 12, 2024, had hailed Governor Sanwo-Olu for settling the emoluments and thanking him for bringing succor to the Corporation by the payments of all emoluments for the period from August 2011 up to Oct, Nov, Dec, 2016 and till date. Accrued rights (bond) of the Corporation retirees up to Dec 2022 was also allegedly settled. Read more

ICPC Case: Court convicts mother of 5 for forging late Abba Kyari’s signature (Sun)
A Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Gwagwalada, Abuja, has found guilty and convicted one Mrs. Ramat Mercy Mba, a mother of five children guilty of forging the signature of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s Chief of Staff, the late Abba Kyari.
The presiding judge, Justice Ibrahim Mohammad however deferred the sentencing of the convict till Thursday, 16th of May, 2024 but directed that she should be remanded in Suleja Correctional Centre.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had arraigned Mba in June, 2022 on a 5-count charge bordering on cheating, fraud and forgery contrary to Section 13 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 200 and Sections 320 (b), 366 of the Penal Code Cap 89 laws of Northern Nigeria. 3-year-old baby in stolen car found in Lagos – Police (NewTelegraph)
The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of a three year old boy identified as, Olamide Taiwo, who was in the car stolen by robbers in Ogun State.
Sunday Telegraph had earlier reported that a vehicle with a three-year-old boy inside was stolen in Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking on the development, Police spokeswoman Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident, explaining that the automobile, which had its engine running, was taken away as Fayobi stepped down to open his gate. Read more
Nigeria, China customs sign agreement on trade facilitation (Leadership)
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC), to foster bilateral relationship for the enhancement of economic growth between both countries.
The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Adewale Adeniyi, led some of his management team in Shenzhen on Wednesday, where he highlighted the significance of knotting bilateral affiliation with China, which, according to him, will boost the two countries’ import-export operations and favour the businesses of MSMEs in Nigeria.
The CGC appreciated the Vice Minister of the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Lingjun, for showing interest in signing MoU with the NCS. Read more
NASS to receive Tinubu’s tax reforms committee report September (Punch)
The Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee says it will transmit its policy recommendations to the National Assembly by the end of Q3 2024.
These include new National Tax and Borrowing Policies to be implemented in September and new proposals to amend the Constitution, which would take effect from 2025.
“We’re at a point now where we’re drafting the laws, including possible amendments to the Constitution. We envisage that by quarter three, our documents will be ready to go to the National Assembly and by the end of that Q3, we should have them enacted into law,” the Committee’s chairman, Taiwo Oyedele, said after a close-out retreat held on Saturday at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. Labour to picket NERC, DisCos offices on Monday over electricity tariff hike (Channels)
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) will picket the office of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and distribution companies (DisCos)’s premises nationwide on Monday over the hike in electricity tariff.
“We write to inform you of the picketing action scheduled to take place in the offices of the NERC and Electricity Distribution companies (DISCOS) in all states, including the FCT,” the unions said in a joint statement by NLC’s Ag General Secretary Chris Uyot and his TUC counterpart Anka Hassan
“The action will jointly take place on Monday, 13th of May, 2024 nationwide simultaneously. Therefore, the two Labour centres are directed to work together to carry out this important action. FBI faces calls to release report on death of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh (UPI)
The FBI is facing pressure to release its long-awaited report investigating the 2022 killing of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.
Abu Akleh was shot dead on May 11, 2022, while covering a raid by the Israeli military on a Palestinian refugee camp in the West Bank while wearing a press vest and standing with other journalists when she was shot dead by an Israeli soldier.
Her death, which former U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price admitted was caused by Israel, increased the temperature between Palestinians and occupation forces already strained by rising violence by illegal Israeli settlers and, later, police raids on the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem in the buildup to the current war in Gaza. At least 7 dead in Mother’s Day weekend shootings (NBC)
At least seven people have been killed in a spate of weekend shootings across the country, including in Georgia, Florida and Ohio.
Two were killed following a shooting at an Atlanta nightclub early Sunday morning. Officers responded to the Elleven45 Lounge at 2110 Peachtree Rd. NW at around 2:28 a.m. and found six people who had been shot, according to the Atlanta Police Department.
Two of them were pronounced dead on the scene and two others were taken to a nearby hospital and are expected to survive. The conditions of the other victims are not known at this time. Read more
At least 6 killed in Belgorod building collapse, Russia says (AlJazeera)
At least six people have been killed and 20 others injured after a building collapsed in the Russian border city of Belgorod, according to Russian officials.
A video released by the Russian Ministry of Civil Defence, Emergencies and Disaster Relief on Sunday showed firefighters and rescuers working on a huge pile of rubble. The ministry said that six bodies had been recovered from the rubble.
“The number of injured, according to the latest data, is 20 people,” emergency services were quoted as saying by the Russian state news agency TASS. Read more

Drake‘s Toronto mansion has been the target of yet another intrusion, marking the third such incident this week.
According to TMZ, the unwanted visitor attempted to make their way onto Drizzy’s property on Saturday (May 11) but were met with a rude awakening from the rapper’s security team.
Police were reportedly summoned to the area at 3:30 p.m. ET after Drake’s private security tackled the man and held him down until officers arrived. The cops then escorted the man off the property after he refused to leave when asked to do so. Read more

Nigerian athlete, Tobi Amusan, set another world leading record of completing the 100 metres hurdles in 12.40 seconds (0.9m/s) at Saturday’s inaugural Jamaica Athletics Invitational in Kingston.
The world record holder clinched the victory ahead of Danielle Williams and Christina Clemons – the world champion, who ran a season’s best 12.46 seconds, and American who was third with 12.54 seconds respectively.

A Leeds United fan was allegedly slashed in the neck after the Yorkshire club’s Championship play-off clash against Norwich City.
The alleged attack happened outside Carrow Road following the semi-final first leg on Sunday afternoon (May 12). The incident is said to have taken place after the man spoke to a group of Norwich fans over alleged tragedy chanting.

A “concerned” Novak Djokovic is set to undergo medical tests after feeling the effects of being struck on the head by a bottle in his shock exit from the Italian Open.
Djokovic was beaten 6-2 6-3 in just 67 minutes by Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo in Rome, the six-time champion committing 22 unforced errors, serving five double faults and failing to create a single break point.
