President Donald Trump and Vice-President JD Vance have been sworn in at a lavish affair in Washington that continued into the early hours of Tuesday.

He issued nearly 1,600 pardons in connection with the Capitol riots on 6 January 2021 – many prisoners are expected to be released within hours.

Trump earlier signed a flurry of executive actions, including starting the process of withdrawing the US from the World Health Organization and declaring a national emergency at the southern border.

“The golden age of America begins right now,” Trump said in his inaugural address, adding that he will be a “peacemaker and a unifier”.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk – one of Trump’s closest confidants – has been criticised for making what some have described as a Nazi salute at a post-inauguration event. (BBC)
