The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has initiated a three-day strike in response to an alleged unprovoked assault on one of its members by the relatives of a patient.

It is claimed that the doctor was assaulted while attending to a sickle cell anemia patient on Sunday.

Dr. John Oladapo, the President of UCH ARD, was quoted in a statement provided to the media, demanding a public apology from the alleged relatives of the patient. He also urged the hospital to enhance its security architecture to prevent future incidents.
The statement reads, โ€œOn Sunday, one of our members was the target of a deliberate, premeditated, planned rage, and a furious assault by a patientโ€™s relative.
โ€œThe doctor was attending to a known Sickle Cell patient in a painful crisis at the Emergency Department when the two men confronted him in the consulting room and commenced beating him up.

โ€œThe hospitalโ€™s security officers intervened and rescued our member, but not before he sustained injuries, as well as mental health and self-esteem issues.โ€ (Tribune)
