UNILAG increases tuition fee (Nation)
Authorities at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos have increased fees for undergraduate students.
A source at the meeting noted that the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola said: “it is no longer news that the University of Lagos tuition has not changed in the last 20 years but the cost of managing education has skyrocketed astronomically”.
Previously students of the institution paid N19,000 but management has fixed new fees at N190,250 for students studying medicine while for courses that require laboratory and studio, students are to pay N140,250. Read more
Emefiele: Court fixes July 25 for trial (Vanguard)
The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr Godwin Emefiele, will on July 25, appear before the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court.
The embattled CBN boss, who has been in custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, is billed to enter his plea before Justice Nicholas Oweibo, following allegations the Department of State Services, DSS, leveled against him.
It will be recalled that operatives of the security agency had on June 10, stormed Emefiele’s Ikoyi residence in Lagos on June 10, a day after he was suspended as the governor of the CBN by President Bola Tinubu. Read more

Guinness World Records (GWR) is urging Africans to emulate Nigerians in their pursuit of breaking records.
However, they emphasise the importance of registering their attempts beforehand and adhering to the rules.
Nigeria witnessed a surge in record-breaking endeavours after chef Hilda Baci’s impressive four-day cook-a-thon in May gained recognition from GWR.

Millions lost as fire breaks out at Lagos Port (DailyTrust)
A midnight fire at the Terminal ‘C’ managed by Port and Cargo Limited, Tin-Can Island, Lagos, razed down property worth millions of naira.
Though the fire was eventually put out, one of the cargo handling equipment was completely destroyed by the inferno.
Witnesses said the only fire truck owned by the management of the Terminal could not contain the fire when it started. Read more
Businessman allegedly swindles lover’s friends, lands in dock (Guardian)
A 47-year-old man, Taiwo Oluyemi, was on Friday arraigned in an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly obtaining the sum of N410,000 from two females, to process traveling documents for them.
Oluyemi is charged with obtaining under false pretense and stealing.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Insp Sunday Bassey, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on May 11, Anuoluwapo Street, Alapere, Lagos. Read more
Hajj 2023: Last batch of Lagos state pilgrims arrive (Vanguard)
The last batch of Lagos State pilgrims that participated in the holy pilgrimage in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia landed safely at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos on Thursday.
The pilgrims who were aboard a Flynas airline XY7678 departed the King AbdulAziz International Airport, Jeddah at 10.00am and landed safely at exactly 2.35pm Nigerian time.
Speaking on arrival at the tarmac of the airport, the Amir-ul-Hajj, Prince Anofiu Olanrewaju Elegushi appreciated Allah for His love, mercy and protection over the officials and entire pilgrims throughout the exercise. Read more

Lawyers, litigants, including journalists, were on Friday, ordered to vacate Courtroom 7 of a Federal High Court, Abuja where the trial of ex-terrorist negotiator, Tukur Mamu, was holding.
When the matter was called, counsel from the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, E.A Kaswe, who is prosecuting the case on the Federal Government’s behalf, told the court that their witnesses were in court for the trial.
Kaswe then urged Justice Inyang Ekwo to enforce the order granted to the prosecution on Wednesday when the matter came up. Read more
Tony Bennett, Legendary Pop and Jazz singer, dead at 96 (People)
Music legend Tony Bennett has died. He was 96.
“Tony Bennett, born Anthony Dominick Benedetto in Astoria, Queens on August 3, 1926, has passed away in his hometown of New York City at the age of 96 earlier today,” his rep told PEOPLE in a statement. “The beloved singer, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2016, is survived by his wife, Susan Benedetto, his two sons, Danny and Dae Bennett, his daughters Johanna Bennett and Antonia Bennett and 9 grandchildren.”
The icon’s family confirmed in January 2021 that Bennett had been quietly living with Alzheimer’s disease since 2016. The revelation came as part of a profile on his life for AARP The Magazine. When news broke of his health, Bennett was still capable of recognizing his friends and family. Read more
Catherine Tate says Netflix cancelled her comedy show without telling her (Standard)
Catherine Tate has said Netflix cancelled her series Hard Cell, a mockumentary about the fictional inmates and staff at HMP Woldsley, without telling her.
Tate played multiple characters in the six-episode show, which was slammed by critics and had a dismal 20 percent rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes.
Set in a fictionalised female prison, the show was created, co-written and co-directed by Tate and debuted in April 2022, but it failed to set the streaming giant alight and was canned after just six episodes. Read more

Fighting in Khartoum intensifies after generals briefly appear (AfricaNews)
Air strikes, street battles and artillery fire shook Sudan’s capital Khartoum and the major southern city of El-Obeid on Thursday, witnesses told AFP.
“Artillery fire targeted paramilitary bases of the Rapid Support Forces,” said a resident of El-Obeid, 350 kilometres (220 miles) southwest of Khartoum.
Fighting between the RSF and the regular army, led by feuding generals, has killed at least 3,000 people and displaced more than 3.3 million since April 15. Army jets on Thursday were striking paramilitaries, who were responding with anti-aircraft fire, said another El-Obeid resident, who asked not to be named for security reasons. Read more

The 30-year-old singer released a single and music video for the song “Love Like This” on Friday.
The “Love Like This” video shows Malik driving up on a motorcycle and meeting his new love, played by actress Grace Dumdaw. The couple are seen getting close and at one point kissing and levitating above the city. Read more

Succession star Brian Cox and Catastrophe’s Rob Delaney are among the confirmed speakers at a London rally in support of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
U.K. actors union Equity revealed plans earlier this week for two major demonstrations on Friday in solidarity with the actors strike. Twin rallies will take place at noon local time in London’s Leicester Square and in Manchester’s Media City.
Speakers so far scheduled for the London rally include Cox and Delaney as well as The Pact and Alex Rider star Rakie Ayola, Equity general secretaries Paul W. Fleming and Lynda Rooke, and Bectu boss Philippa Childs. Member of Parliament John McDonnell is also set to speak. Read more

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sacked his country’s ambassador to the UK.
Vadym Prystaiko had recently criticised the president’s response to a row over gratitude for British military aid.

Leverkusen in advanced talks to sign Boniface for €20m (Guardian)
Bayer Leverkusen have edged closer to signing Nigerian striker, Victor Boniface from Union Saint-Gilloise for a fee which is reported to be worth more than €20 million.
Italian journalist and transfer market expert, Fabrizio Romano on Friday disclosed this via his official Twitter account with Boniface also eager to move to Leverkusen.
“Bayer Leverkusen are in advanced talks to sign Victor Boniface from Union St Gilloise — negotiations progressing and deal getting closer,” Romano wrote on Twitter. Read more
Transfer: Nigerian midfielder, Nwakali joins Portuguese side GD Chaves (Vanguard)
Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali has signed a three-year contract with Portuguese Primeira club GD Chaves.
The 25-year-old played for Spanish second division side SD Ponferradina in the 2022–2023 season. He scored once in 33 appearances for the team.
Nwakali was part of the Nigeria U-17 team that won the World Cup in 2015 and was named the best player of the tournament. Read more
Nottingham Forest to buy Anthony Elanga from Manchester United for £15m (Telegraph)
Nottingham Forest are set to sign Manchester United forward Anthony Elanga in a £15 million deal.
Elanga will have a medical in Nottingham over the weekend before becoming the second signing of the summer for Steve Cooper.
The Sweden international has rejected offers from Everton, West Ham and Marseille to join Forest, who agreed a fee with United earlier on Friday. Elanga will end a nine-year association with United to move to the City Ground. Read more

England captain Millie Bright will wear armbands supporting inclusion, indigenous people and gender equality in the Women’s World Cup group stage.
Players can choose from eight Fifa-sanctioned armbands, but not the OneLove design that led to Fifa threatening sanctions at the 2022 men’s World Cup.
Bright will also support new causes in any knockout games.

Just Stop Oil protesters have disrupted The Open golf championship with a smoke flare and orange powder at the 17th hole.
The group tweeted: “Three Just Stop Oil Supporters have disrupted The British Open – they demand that the UK government halts all new oil and gas projects.”
One of the players – believed to be American Billy Horschel – helped security remove the protesters after the incident, which happened at around 12.20pm. Read more
Red Bull provide Perez damage update ahead of FP2 (RN365)
Sergio Perez will take part in second practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix after Red Bull completed repairs on his RB19.
The Mexican’s miserable run of form continued with a crash just four minutes into the first hour of running at the Hungaroring, Perez dipping his left-hand wheels on the grass on entry to Turn 5, before spinning into the barriers.
His crash left a sizeable amount of damage to the left-hand side of his Red Bull, with the suspension, front wing, floor and sidepod all seemingly affected. Read more
