Some hoodlums set ablaze a vehicle late Saturday after a yet-to-be-identified pedestrian was killed in an accident that occurred along the Onipanu area of Lagos State by a speeding driver.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, in a statement on Sunday, said the accident occurred when the driver of a Toyota Venza rammed into the pedestrian due to speeding.
The impact of the collision was said to have led to the death of the pedestrian.
Oke-Osanyintolu said, “Upon arrival to the incident scene at 2048hrs, LASEMA’s Cobra Response Team observed that a Toyota Venza, with registration number, EKY 839 HU, overspeed and hit a pedestrian at the aforementioned location.
“Preliminary investigations conducted by the agency’s Response Team revealed that the driver of the above-mentioned Toyota Venza was at a top speed when he lost control and collided with a male pedestrian crossing the highway.
“The yet-to-be-identified adult male lost his life to the incident and had been taken off the scene before the arrival of the responders.”
The incident was said to have generated tension, which prompted the LASEMA team to call for police backup.
Our correspondent, however, noted that before the arrival of the police, the hoodlums set the vehicle ablaze.“The agency’s Response Team informed officials of the Nigeria Police Force of the incident, and volatility of the scene due to activities of miscreants who escalated the incident, vandalised and set the accident vehicle ablaze,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
