A provocative new play exploring the darker corners of human relationships will open this year’s ABITFA theatre festival at the Brazilian Embassy in Abuja.
“Vengeful Merriment,” penned by Ronald Vieira, transforms a mortuary into a stage for three women grappling with the death of a mutual acquaintance.
The surrealist production, directed by Jerry Adesewo and Jibrin Ahmed, follows the intertwining stories of Anita, Lourdes and Clara as they maintain a charged vigil over a murder victim. Through absurdist dialogue, the characters peel back layers of love, betrayal and revenge, revealing their complex connections to the deceased.
The stellar cast features renowned performers Aunty Shine, Olajumoke Michelle and Nanwal, with Etim Peter rounding out the ensemble. Nwankwo Ijeoma serves as production manager for this compelling exploration of humanity’s light and shadow.
Two performances are scheduled for Tuesday, November 5 – a morning show during the opening ceremony at 10am and an evening performance at 5pm. Theatre enthusiasts can still secure their seats through the festival’s online booking system.
