The Department of State Services (DSS) has clarified that it did not invade the Lagos House of Assembly on Monday.

Daily Sun reported that DSS operatives stormed the Lagos assembly premises and the offices of Mojisola Meranda, her deputy and the clerk of the house were subsequently sealed.

But speaking amid the brewing tension caused by its presence, the DSS stated that its operatives were deployed following a request by the assembly itself. Read more 

Power Outage: UCH resident doctors to embark on indefinite strike (Guardian)

The University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan says a team of its surgeons led by Prof. Olayinka Shittu has successfully performed an intricate procedure to reconstruct a urethral stricture in a 50-year-old patient

The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan Chapter, says it will embark on an indefinite strike if power is not restored to the residential areas of the hospital.

This is contained in a communiqué from its emergency meeting held on Feb. 14, which was made available to newsmen on Monday in Ibadan.

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), reconnected the UCH on Feb. 12, after more than 100 days of power outage. Read more 

Heavy security presence as Lagos Assembly holds plenary amid leadership tussle (Channels)

The leadership tussle in the Lagos State House of Assembly took a new twist on Monday with heavy security presence at the premises during a plenary session. 

Security vans and personnel were spotted in and outside the premises of the Lagos Assembly complex in the Alausa Area of the commercial city.

Lagos serves 48hr quit notice to illegal traders at Idumota, Ebute Ero (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Government has issued a 24-hour quit notice to illegal traders and occupants under the Idumota, Ebute Ero Police Police overhead, and environs in Lagos Island to vacate due to violations of environmental laws and degradation.

Meanwhile, the state government also ordered the immediate unsealing of the Oke Arin/Gorodom Market, following a mutual agreement reached.

The market was shut down over environmental degradation and encroachment on drainage alignments. Read more 

Stop illegal recycling, scavenging activities, LAWMA warns property owners (Independent)

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has cautioned property owners, agents and private occupiers in the state to henceforth, desist from illegal recycling and scavenging in unlicensed facilities.

LAWMA also advised them to halt indiscriminate sorting, dumping, storing and trading of recyclable waste in their facilities and in public spaces around them.

Managing Director/CEO of the agency, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, while commenting on a public notice issued by LAWMA to property owners, agents and private occupiers to that effect,  noted that such activities not only degraded the city’s aesthetic appeal but also disrupted the rights of property owners, contributing to serious environmental hazards. Female partner at large as Police Inspector found dead in Ogun hotel (Leadership)

A police Inspector identified as Haruna Mohammed was on Sunday found dead in an hotel room he earlier checked in with a female companion at the Akute area of Ogun State.

The late policeman reportedly arrived at the Super G Royal Hotel, located at 11 Anthony Uzum Estate, Oyeyemi, Akute with the woman, now at-large at midnight of Saturday, February 15, 2025.

Manager of the hotel, one Deborah Adejobi reportedly found the room where the policeman and his female partner had checked in unlocked at about 8:52 am. Read more

Establish national hall of fame, Solomon Lar’s widow urges FG (Punch)

The late former Plateau State Governor Solomon Lar’s wife, Mary, has urged the Federal Government to establish a national hall of fame to honour the country’s heroes and achievers across various fields.

She made this call on Saturday at a service of tribute organised by the Plateau State Government in Abuja in honour of the late General Jeremiah Useni.

General Useni, a former Federal Capital Territory Minister, died on January 23, 2025.

Lar said the establishment of the hall of fame as done in other countries would inspire the young ones to give their all to their country. Read more

Pope’s health a ‘complex clinical situation’, Vatican says (BBC)

Pope Francis is being treated for a “complex clinical situation” and will remain in hospital for as long as necessary, the Vatican has said.

The 88-year-old was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Friday to undergo treatment and tests for bronchitis.

In an update on Monday, the Vatican said the pontiff has a “polymicrobial infection” of his respiratory tract, which has required a change in his treatment. Read more

Papal thriller Conclave and immigrant epic The Brutalist on Sunday tied for top honours at Britain’s BAFTA awards with each film picking up four coveted gongs.

Conclave, directed by German-born Edward Berger, won the BAFTA for the best film with its tale of the intrigue and horse-trading behind the scenes during the election of a new pope.

Accepting the award, Berger recalled the journey to make the film took seven years, paying tribute to British screenplay writer Peter Straughan’s “wonderful script” and lead actor Ralph Fiennes. Read more

Screen legend Jack Nicholson — a three-time Oscar-winner who hasn’t appeared in a film since 2010’s How Do You Know — introduced Adam Sandler, who sang a new song about Saturday Night Live, on Sunday’s special celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary.

Nicholson, 87, wore a dark suit and beret with the New York Yankees logo on it as he whistled, clapped and announced from his seat, “Ladies and gentlemen, Adam Sandler!”

“Let’s hear it for Jack, baby! Jack made it out tonight! I love you brother,” Sandler — who was an SNL cast member from 1990 to 1995 — said before launching into his 5-minute song, which was a funny and heartfelt look at SNL’s half-century on NBC. Read more

France hosting European talks on Ukraine (VOA) 

French President Emmanuel Macron is set to host a group of European leaders for talks Monday focused on the situation in Ukraine amid a shift in the US approach to the conflict and suggestions by U.S. officials that Europe would not have a role in peace talks.

Among those expected to attend were leaders from Britain, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands and Denmark. NATO chief Mark Rutte, European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen were also due to participate.

European leaders have in recent days pledged continued support for Ukraine, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer saying his government was ready to send troops to Ukraine as part of any postwar peacekeeping force. Read more

College student wins $100k after beating Bucks star Damian Lillard in 3-point contest at NBA All-Star Weekend (CNN)

College student Jaren Barajas has a new claim to fame after beating Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard in a shooting contest, winning $100,000 in the process.

Barajas and Lillard were competing in the MrBeast $100,000 Challenge during the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday when the 18-year-old shot what he later called a “life-changing” bucket.

In the matchup, Barajas had to drain one three-pointer from the logo at half-court before Lillard could make three. The veteran point guard had made two successful attempts when Barajas drained a buzzer-beater with his final effort, sparking a frenzied reaction from fans inside Chase Center. Read more

FC Barcelona has managed to make a new signing outside of the recently-closed transfer window as explained by SPORT, citing anonymous sources.

Hafiz Gariba is described as “a promising centre back who will join the club with immediate effect” after he signed a three-year contract upon turning 18.

The signing was expected to happen for a while, but Barca had to wait until the Ghanaian became of adult age to receive his ‘OK’. Read more

On-loan Sheffield United defender Rob Holding has said that the club have made it easy for him to slot in since joining from Crystal Palace in January.

Holding has made two appearances off the bench for the Blades and has adapted quickly to his new surroundings.
